New constitution or ex-parrot?
CRC opines That vaunted Constitution of yours is dead -- sold out, bought up, all paid for.

It seems to me that I once ran across a quote from Benjamin Franklin (although twenty minutes on Google has not turned it up, so I can't vouch for its authenticity) to the effect that he thought the Republic might last for a couple of centuries before the populace became so debauched that they would be fit only for tyranny. Pretty prescient, if true.

cordially,
"Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist."
New There are a lot of quotes like that
Jefferson on the occasion of a minor rebellion:
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

John Adams:
"Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide."

And on, and on, and on.

The choice to make the US a republic rather than a democracy was carefully considered and hardly accidental. A good part of our Constitution is meant to protect us from the evils of centralized government.

Cheers,
Ben

New Another variant has it
that as BF was leaving the Hall, a woman asked ~ "wha hoppen; what'd we get?"

And he said ~ "a Republic - if you can keep it".

(I think it doesn't matter that it ain't on 3-D 5.2 Dolby digital at K-Mart - we know what he Meant.)

But I'm with CRC's screed above - a furriner who knows more about the US Constitution than 90% of bored-again Consumers. We lost it. We *don't* have a "culture" except bizness slogans and dissembling. We are *exactly* like the guy with the executioner:

He swings the blade.
Guy: stands there, says "Hah! You Missed!"
Executioner: "wait til you sneeze.."
