A first cousin once-removed, in the course of an exchange on social media with another first cousin once-removed —both men are in their thirties, I believe—has referred to Obama as a “fascist despot,” and asserts that he was the most “right-wing” president until Trump, adding that the latter is only incrementally worse.
I have participated only peripherally in the dustup, which consists of broadsides being exchanged between relative #1, who would probably self-identify as a Marxist (and who has stated that his entire extended clan, including my good self, are all “right-wingers”), and relative #2, a typical libertarian-flavored Trumpista (“Taxation is theft!” “Reward prosperity!”) low-information voter (“Oh, yeah? Ever hear of the National Socialist Workers Party?”). I must say that relative #1 is landing more blows than relative #2, although owing to the thickness of his skull relative #2 does not appear to be aware of this.
Going back to the early seventies, though, I always hated hearing things like “fascist despot” being tossed (in more than one sense of that word) around, although I can’t claim—I wish I could—to have been prescient enough to sense that we needed to keep that rhetorical powder dry half a century in advance.
cordially,
