Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Essential PH-1 with 360 camera for $399 at Amazon today.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B075TNZDC7/

I couldn't resist, and didn't feel like waiting for the V30 to drop to similar price levels.

Cheers,
Scott.
New You have to post some 360 video when you get that

Drew
New No video yet. Initial Essential Ph-1 mini-review.
Ph-1 = Ph-one = Phone. Clever. ;-)

I finally backed up everything on my LG V10 and got the Ph-1 configured today.

I had to buy some USB-A to USB-C cables to get it to talk to my PC to do some backups. It comes with a charger and a USB-PD cable, but nothing that connects to a PC.

It's fast. I like the vibration motor. It's well assembled and feels good in my hand (in the case I got for it).

I always want to use a glass screen protector. I got one for it and it installed easily. Unfortunately, the front isn't perfectly flat (it has a gentle crown), so there's a gap around the edges. :-( It's not a functional problem (thus far), and looking straight on it's not really noticeable unless you look for it, but it's an aesthetic annoyance.

It's running 7.1.1 with the latest security updates. Supposedly Essential is skipping 8.0 for 8.1 for the next OS upgrade.

I used "SMS Backup +" to backup my text messages, to a new (dedicated) GMail account. It didn't seem to finish fully the first time, so I did it twice. It seemed to work. I transferred my Pimlical calendars and contacts list via the PC. I have 3 (now 4) Gmail accounts that I used on the V10. I didn't appreciate that my Android Contacts were tied to a Google account and not to the phone. On starting up the Essential, I saw that my Google contacts were scattered across the 3 accounts, and some were missing. So I spent a bunch of time re-entering that data and collecting it all in one account (to make things easier next time) - there may have been some way to get it via some backup, but it wasn't clear to me. (LG has a "LG Backup" but that's for LG to LG transfers.)

The Essential (maybe a feature of 7.1, the V10 is on 7.0) offers the ability to setup multiple Users on the phone, but that seems to set them as segregated users (like different logins on Winders) - so that wouldn't have helped me with the contacts issue.

I'm used to the V10 combination power/fingerprint sensor button on the back. The Essential has the fingerprint button in the same place as the V10, but there's a separate power button on the side (near mis-side, under the volume buttons). Pressing the power button twice brings up the camera quickly. The fingerprint sensor is fast.

The stock launcher seems Ok, but I decided to try Nova Launcher (and spent the $5 for the Prime version). I haven't studied all the options, but I think it will be worth using (I like that it saves all the settings to make it easier to transfer them to a new phone, when the next upgrade comes).

I've only taken a few inside pictures thus far. They're Ok - good exposure and colors with a reasonable amount of light, some issues with low light (but that's to be expected). Not terribly sharp though. I imagine it'll be better outside and with better light.

I haven't figured out a replacement for a LG weather "widget" that sits on the home screen that was very handy. 1-2 icons high, 3-4 icons wide. Small and unobtrusive, but big enough to show more than a temperature and an alert that there's a flood watch. Looking on the Play Store for weather widgets has thus far shown me weather apps that run full screen (and many that require a bunch of scrolling). :-( . I'll have to look around some more.

So far, I'm very happy with it. It seems well worth the $400 I paid for it.

Dunno when I'll get to trying the 360 camera. Apparently it uses a huge amount of power and the battery life is very short. Plus, one has to remove any case to use it. :-/

Cheers,
Scott.
New Stock Android has a whether widget that matches that description
Not sure why you aren't seeing it.
--

Drew
New I find the list of "apps" easily, ...
But I don't see any "widgets".

Sliding up the app drawer shows lots and lots of apps. On the V10, there's a tab with "widgets", but I don't see that on the Ph-1. Curious.

I'll have to poke around some more.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Ah, here we go.
It apparently needs to go on the Dock or something.

Details here:

https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/nova-launcher-101-add-any-widget-android-oreos-expanded-dock-0181059/

I'm using the NOAA Weather Free widget. Then a long-press on the widget to resize the and I'm done.

There's probably some way to put it directly on the home screen, but this is good enough for now.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Also, too.
Long-pressing on an empty area of the home screen brings up a menu of widget options. I think I tried that earlier but nothing seemed to happen. Maybe a reboot was required or something.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Cheers,
Scott.
New Chronus for your weather widget
New Thanks for the pointer.
New You're in an exclusive club.
Under 90K units sold.
New Yup.
I hope they find a way to stay in business (or get bought out by someone with deep pockets). It's a good phone.

I wish I could find a screen protector for it, though. It's got a very slight crown and only this one from Moshi claims to be curved to fit it. Unfortunately, it's not available yet. Even plastic ones seem to be problematic.

(sigh)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Nah, let it go pop
The Essential is a curiosity phone - it took a near 50% price drop for you to become interested, for example.

The way to stay in business will be to make a phone that people actually want to buy :)
New Didn't realize (or didn't remember) this.
Wikipedia:

On August 2017, it was reported that Amazon, Tencent and Foxconn have invested in Essential Products.[11][12]

That probably has something to do with their new $450 version, with Alexa...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Had to move on...
It's a nice phone in many respects - great battery life, feels solid in the hand, speedy, runs 8.1 well.

But there's something wrong with the radios. You can have a decent signal in a low-signal area and then suddenly you'll lose the connection and it will take forever to come back. Sometimes toggling Airplane Mode off and on will bring it back quicker. Sometimes it won't. There's some speculation that the smarts that switch in and out various antennas (for the various bands and WiFi) have a design flaw and a good connection will switch to suddenly having 30 dB more attenuation, killing the connection. Or that it won't stay on a decent cellular band but decides to go searching even though the other bands have weaker signals. It's a bit of a mystery.

I've never had it drop a call (at least that I recall) but there will be 20 minute delays getting texts in rooms with weak signal strength. Or calls will immediately go to voice mail.

J is ready to kill me because she can't reliably reach me when she wants. :-(

So, I'm going to have to move on to a different phone. I can't wait for the next Pixel or whatever (plus the cost will be more than I'm willing to spend).

I just ordered a V30S from B&H. I've had decent luck with LG phones (I liked my V10) so I think I'll be pretty happy with it. Since it ships with 8.0 it has Treble, so it should get updates more quickly than otherwise.

And it has the 3.5 mm jack! Woot!

It's more than I wanted to spend, but I don't have the time to agonize over the choices. ;-)

The Essential 360 Camera is still in the box...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: And it has the 3.5 mm jack! Woot!
Luddite! :)
Alex

New That 3.5mm jack.
I think the fact the first Apple and then a few others dispensed with it has spurned on some serious development around Bluetooth audio. Although mine has one (it's four+ years old), I acquired an EarStudio Bluetooth audio receiver (I've posted about it before) and I rarely use the audio socket on the phone anymore.

Bluetooth headphones have a reputation of having less than wonderful audio quality as well as being expensive. The EarStudio and others are attempting to change that since you can use your own, well-loved headphones to the party.

Interestingly, I would have greatly disliked having to find a Bluetooth solution if I'd purchased a phone without an audio socket. But do it the other way around... :-)

Wade.
New I'm sure it will eventually be replaced.
Yup. LG is selling bundles at B&H of phones with Bluetooth headsets.

But even at this late date lots of phones have Bluetooth issues (I think even the Pixel 2 has had problems with some cars, or something).

My 2004 VW has an aftermarket adapter box to tie into the Monsoon stereo. That interface is either via an old multipin Apple plug or a 3.5mm plug. So the 3.5mm plug is valuable for me. Saves me buying a new car (as the aftermarket car stereo boxes don't quite fit right or are vastly overpriced or don't have features I want)!! ;-)

Just today I see that Essential is bringing out a clip-on 3.5 mm adapter/DAC. If they can fix the reception issues, it would be a very useful accessory for me.

Cheers,
Scott.
New So why can't I find a Bluetooth mic for my car?
Millions of people now have phones without a jack, and cars with Bluetooth. Some of them *must* be as unhappy with the phone mic for hands-free use as I am. So why is no one making a Bluetooth mic to clip to the visor?
--

Drew
New The Kenwood (IIRC) head that I got for Joan's Corolla has a wired mic.
Dunno how common that is, but I think the previous Sony had a wired mic as well.

Presumably a wireless mic for the car would need a battery, then how would you recharge it? But, yeah, they could put a micro (or nano? is there such a thing?) USB port on it.

It probably all comes down to how big the market is for it.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Don't car BT head-units have their own mic?
Our Subaru and Toyota fleet does, so I suspect the other mfgs have similar setups. There are aftermarket replacements, but they are cabled.
New That could be why I'm not finding them
Problem is my phone ends up right in front of the A/C vent, and I get horrible wind noise if it's on.
--

Drew
New How do you have it paired?
From everything I've found, a BT phone pairing overrides speaker and microphone with no option to do just one. But if it is paired as a multimedia device, then only the speaker is overridden.

(Some cars have multiple head units of differing capabilities. e.g. Subaru uses two head units with shared storage. One is controlled via the steering wheel buttons, the other via the stereo system. Only the steering wheel HU has full phone capabilities for 2 phones. And although the stereo unit can do a phone pairing, it is not full featured and some of the commands do not work. That little trick is not documented and because of the shared storage, it took a while to figure out why things were not working right :-/)
New It's not with a head unit
I've got one of these. Pair with it to broadcast to the radio, so it's only the speaker.

There are units that do full phone pairing and have their own mic, but none of the ones I saw supported broadcasting anything except the phone, so I couldn't play music or podcasts through it.
--

Drew
New FM repeater??? WTF was 2018, the Stone Age?
My kid plays his music -- Michael Jackson, ABBA, heh -- on the stereo in our 2014 VW by pairing with the car. Like, Bluetooth directly to the car's infotainment system.

I dread to ask what a "head unit" is -- something that connects to the read head in the cassette player?

New My car is a 2004
Still does everything I want except pair with the phone, so why would I replace it?
--

Drew
New Yup, sure, valid reason.
There are some different strategies for getting the most value out of a car. Buying new is of course right out the window; that depreciation in the first couple years is killer. The main contenders seem to be a) "buy at x years old, sell at y" and b) "buy at z years old, drive it into the ground". Where z is almost always equal to or larger than x, but usually not (at least, not much) larger than y.

And if you're happy with your purchase according to strategy a, you can switch to b. That's what I was considering doing with my previous car, the 2009 Exeo I bought in '11. But then the insurance company said it would be too expensive to repair the humongous scratch made by a bus that decided to change into my lane, never mind that I was there already, so they bought me out of it. Bought the Tiguan in summer 2016, again at two years old. Driving the tiny distances I do -- ~7-8,000 km in almost three years? -- depreciation by sheer model-year age will hit me much more than by wear-and-tear, so keeping it until it rusts away (which I don't know if it ever will) would seem to be the financially prudent alternative.

New My last three
I bought an '02 Chevy Cavalier new in early '03. Changed brakes and tires, but no other major work until April '16. By then the rust on the rear fenders was getting pretty bad, and it needed brakes again.

Picked up an '05 Ford Taurus with a salvage title. It had been in an accident and repaired. I went really cheap because I knew that ... November '16 I needed a car for the oldest daughter. Got her an '04 Dodge Neon that had been really well maintained.

Daughter went to college end of August last year and I sold the Ford, which still ran fine but the floorboards had rusted out.

I've been driving the Dodge, which is starting to show rust on the fenders.

tl;dr
I went from strategy a straight to a hard c.

This spring when we sell the house I'll be going strategy b for either a Honda Fit or a Ford Transit Connect.

Drew
New well you "could" replace the radio, cheaper than replacing the car

New "Head unit"
generic term for the infotainment system in any car.

Basically it's the thing with the volume knob on it.
New "Head unit" ... "volume knob" ...
There's a blow job joke there, but I'm too classy to make it.

Drew
New No you're not.
You're just too lazy.
New No, I actually tried
But nothing came to me.
