Several websites I'm aware of use this. As my web access is subject to interruption, I'm made aware of this when the page isn't there (refresh results in no access). Thankyouverymuch, I can refresh my own browser.

Shame: The New York Times (but not the Archives pages), FuckedCompany (but what do you expect?).

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?

It would not be that hard to have a user option to control the refresh rate for a given page. Although I am thinking about having the rate setting be stored server-side (and used to generate the meta tag), client-side might also be possible.

I have also kicked around the idea of adjusting the refresh rate based on traffic density in some apps.
