Thane's rules for Christmas Music
1. Christmas music is only to be played after Thanksgiving until December 25th. 2. See rule #1. 3. If Ella Fitzgerald sang it, just don't try. Sorry, Annie Lennox, you have a great voice, but Ella got to Winter Wonderland first, and there's no way you're going to top that. 4. If the song was arranged for Mariah Carey, make sure you have a five octave range before singing it. 5. "Last Christmas" is NOT A FUCKING CHRISTMAS SONG. 6. Same goes for "Do They Know It's Christmas/Feed the World". Seriously, just bury that turd. 7. I don't know if I like Michael Bublé's singing voice; I just know I don't like what it sounds like after every ounce of potential talent has been autotuned out of it. 8. Mannheim Steamroller is the same as Bublé, except that every ounce of soul has been synthesized out of the music itself. 9. It is OK to headbang to Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve/Sarajevo.
These thoughts brought to you by an atheist with a childhood nostalgia streak.

I also happen to like (some) Christmas music, but I also know that over time if I listen to something too much, I burn out on it.

(It's local, a bakery in Marin county; dunno if they ship or have contacts elsewhere) All I know is that: it Is por moi the most enticing improvement to the genre, yet tasted. Over even the last millennium.

Context matters.
I know exactly the song you're talking about. At not one point in the song does the woman actually say she doesn't want to say - she's talking about what everybody else would think if she stayed. In the culture of the time, the perception of a woman's "purity" was more important than her own desires, and if you read between the lines the lines she sings are "Somebody else might look badly at me" rather than "I don't want to be here."
...at least, that's one interpretation. It's definitely a song that's changed in meaning and perception over the years. (And yes, he could have offered to call her a cab.)

Too many overdone Western songs, anyway.
I normally corral a heap of Kpop Christmas songs (of which a number are actually in English). I did that once at the family Christmas gathering a few years ago and my mother never noticed. It was Christmas-y music, anyway.

Heh.
There was a popular song on the Western charts in '02 you might've heard of: The Ketchup Song. The main version had all the verses in Spanish, but the chorus...? Well, I've heard that it is deliberately misheard version of a rap in English - as if repeated by a Spanish speaker who does not understand English. :-)

Don't skip, watch it all
I am a non-musician. But I pay attention. What he is trying to do in the beginning, and I didn't understand it, was listen to music that he was imagining him playing the drums along with. Which he then turned into a masterful accompaniment of the initial music. I had to go back after and listen to some of it and watch again because at that point I understood what he was doing. Just initially I see a guy listen to music and sounding like he was memorizing the music to maybe replay the music. That was quite interesting as well but I was wrong. He was actively creating in his mind while he was listening to the music.

Pfft.
There's some pretty decent kid's music these days, ever heard of Caspar Babypants? Local chap who used to be the lead singer for The Presidents of the United States of America, the court jesters of the grunge scene. How many people can take "Pop Goes the Weasel" and turn it into a commentary on what it's like to be a one-hit wonder while still being a kid's song?
Of course, Sturgeon's Law applies to everything - and what fits in one person's 90% might be a favorite of another person. Or as I say, everybody has a right to their own taste in music, even if it's wrong.

I'm pretty sure I hate the idea of "kids' music"
Sure there's stuff that's inappropriate lyrically, so I'd tend to avoid listening to that around them. But anything that's made specifically for kids tends to be horrible.

Belive me, I was horrified by the idea at first...
and yes, there is a lot of utter garbage in the kid's world. Don't even get me started about Raffi, who apparently is huge in a lot of families. (Not mine, that fucker gets skipped any time his music comes up) And we're not even going to talk about that fucking purple dinosaur.
There are a few songs out there that are surprisingly decent. Casper Babypants doesn't use "inappropriate" language, and yet still somehow ends up sounding like he's still doing a continuation of his old grunge band. (which was halfway to a kids' band already - "Little Dune Buggy", "Some Postman", "Peaches" for example)
Then there's Kira Willey's "Let's Go To Work" which I've actually considered doing a solo jazz routine to - played it for a few other local dancers, and they've all reacted rather positively to it.
