iRiver
Does everything that you've asked for and more...Except no rechargeable battery -- unless you have your own rechargeable AA batteries.
MP3. OGG. FM Radio. Recording. Linux CLI support (including some very active development currently.) GNOME interface for the Linux support. Debian packages for the above (ifp-line and ifp-gnome).
I get a good 4-5 hours out of a single AA battery on my iRiver 795. I don't remember the price; was a birthday present back in April.

Look like a winner
My son also recommended it - says they can take abuse.
I've just spent the last hour sorting songs. Workout. Non Workout.
Workout songs must maintain a certain speed. I probably have another 10 hours of sorting to do!

Nope
That's the T30. I know nothing about the T30 except what's on that page.
Couple things stick out as differences, though. The T30 uses a AAA battery, and my 795 uses AA. The T30 claims 24 hours playback on a single cell, whereas the 795 claims 40 hours. (Also, note that my claim of 4-5 hours was very likely off, perhaps by 3-4x as much; I don't pay that much attention to how many times I use it before I change batteries.) Also, the 795 has a mini-joystick-like-thing. The picture of the T30 doesn't show that anywhere.

Ahh, thanks
I'm always a bit confused when dealing with model numbers on vendor sites since they often have vendor specific numbers.

Looks like the T10 is the next gen 795

$20 more.
Better display. Little longer battery. Lock on controls in case I bump them. SRS WOW for the surround sound - I really like SRS. Seems like the joy stick is a bit flatter, less chance for damage.
Only downside it the battery is my responsibility. Fine. I like it.

Just to note...
...The 795 has a lock, too. That is all.

Got the T10
I LIKE!
No special software required to copy files, just use it like a USB disk.
Sounds great.
Menus easy to navigate.
Display is easy to use. I really disliked the multi-line LCD display of the other one, so I'm glad I found this for that alone.
Cost $150 plus I got the $20 replacement deal. I figure I'll break it in 23 months and get a new one, and since you won't be able to get it then (at least with that little memory) they will be forced to upgrade me.

Q re Car Talk
I presume you mean ~ there's a simple er chron job that the s/w can invoke to d/l a stream from NPR?
(And that might or might not be a viable option por moi; CT comes on usually before I'm 'up', but I have only dial-up.)
But, in principle - I could leave box on, maybe {ugh} come up with a script to dial-up ISP at T-1 minute; let the unit, at T=0 supply the URL, then record for Y minutes.
Izzat ~ it?
'Cause that could be handy, not only for the Tappet Bros. Hmmm, later xfer --> HD. Make CD for car, with a series of these from HD..

Nope
The iriver t10 include a radio. And a timed recorder. So I can program it to record car-talk.
