When we 'borrow' them
Adopt them? we also demand that their oft- mellifluous pronunciation / enunciation Shall Be: rendered into something crude, oft-gutteral McImitation of that which we have rendered-down:

eg.

Va-LAY-o for, 'Vallejo' (Va-yeh'-ho)

Lazanguhlus for, 'Los Angeles' (Los Angh'-el\ufffds)

'Course too, many Muricans omit noticing the many variants of the 'a' sound even in English, in a word's context. As to nukular -

We turn lilacs into stinkweed, seemingly from some mutant offspring of that xenophobia which Resents anything NIH (not invented ..)

(I note that the Muricanized words as have crept into other languages - usually of the \ufffd sort - are modified by a local accent as well, but I haven't noticed in travels: so methodical an effort to make them sound Ugly, as well.)
