New That is almost workable
You're right about the price point, it is nice. Unfortunately if [link|http://cmb.phys.cwru.edu/kisner/linux/compaq-r3000/|http://cmb.phys.cwru...nux/compaq-r3000/] is to be believed, the wireless networking is from an internal Broadcom chip which is not supported under Linux. I've heard that getting an internal networking card working is significantly nicer than playing around with external ones.

Cheers,
Ben

New I've generally had good luck with pcmcia
I've had some hiccups lately with MEPIS...but not alot of issues with vanilla debian...which I intend to revert my other TP to when I get a round tuit.

A vanilla ($35) linksys 802b card is well supported and generally issue free. The problems arrived with the introduction of the higher speed chipsets.

New So is the built-in wireless not working for you?
I've had other reports where it does work for people on newer versions of Linux.

I'll go with pcmcia if I have to, but it would be nice not to have to.

Cheers,
Ben

New I haven't tried on the T40
since it has only been a couple of weeks since I installed the internal card. I've been using the PCMCIA on my network for years with no issues...and I believe that the chipset on the IBM card is supported at 802.11b...not sure about the higher speed capability.

Karsten popped a card into his penguin laptop and was on...and that party was several years back. Support for the cards is pretty good.

New I have a Broadcom chipset in mine
[link|http://search.hp.com/query.html?col=alldocs&charset=iso-8859-1&hpvc=US+-+English&la=en&qs=&lk=1&rf=0&uf=1&nh=10&st=1&qt=HP+Pavilion+zd8080US+Notebook+PC&ocoldqt=zd8080&oc=441758|HP zd8080us].

You're right that the Broadcom chipset isn't supported natively under Linux. So the wireless card works, but it's using the Windows driver and ndiswireless. It's easy to use and works well, from what I've been able to tell.

The biggest problem I've had is not being able to connect to our wireless network at the office, on which the wireless access point has a 40-bit WEP key installed (what's the point?). So instead of using our own network, I just hijack another unprotected wireless network in the same building. I can reach everything I need from there anyway.

New I'd like to be able to entirely remove...
the infestation from Redmond.

Using a proprietary Windows driver that comes with limitations wouldn't be my first choice. Or second choice. For instance if I ever travel in hotels, I'd want to be able to use my laptop with hotel wireless networks. (I've spent enough time stuck in hotel rooms this year to appreciate the value of doing so.) If silly WEP encryption is what they use, I'd want to work with that rather than have to find a workaround.

If I had no other choice, then I'd do that. But I do, so I won't. (However I will be writing the obligatory letter to Compaq which they will promptly discard in the circular file because they don't care.)

Cheers,
Ben
