Exactly
Imagine two people, not quite facing each other, talking at once. What each says goes past the other - and doesn't register. The result is 2 different conversations, and frustration as half-heard responses don't seem to fit what you said.
When a conversation feels like that, I would say that the people are talking past each other. :-)
