Havnt had a weight change in years but noticed in a mirror, (dont use one too often) that my shoulders are getting visibly soft. Well at the age of 28 I did 150 pushups a day, could break 2x4's with a chop and put a foot flat on an 8ft ceiling. Trying to remember the last time I did a pushup, 2nd kid,hmm 9years ago maybe? So I always knew you start slow, so did 10 a day at first. Am up to 25 a day but it is taking a while to get past that. It dont get easier as you get older :(

I imagine most of us are in IT one way or another, which in all positions requires that we sit on our asses for hours at a time. Then, for amusement, we come here and sit on our asses even longer!

We are a disgusting breed.

I spend a good 75% of my working life on the hoof, either lugging gear around, walking from problem to problem, trying to find the bit of kit with the unterminated thinwire, etc.

I really can't spend more than 25% of my time at my desk, and that's usually spent on the phone.

even we full time delevopers have reason to get out of our chairs. Meetings, covering for the technicians (fix the user workstation, gather information to fix the problem), walk down to different departments that need different AD-HOC reports (Crystal Reports is your friend, now repeat it 15 times), talk to whomever is in charge of the servers and is giving the group "Everyone" read/write access and someone has been scribbling over my ASP and HTML pages that had workable code and somehow it got broken (Hey Boss, let's look at the logs to see who changed it last before you place blame). Well based on my old job anyway.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.
New Present, but removing membership qualifications...
OK, not fat. But I was slowly headed that way. I am 6'3", and used to weigh 180. However in the last few years I have had a more sedentary life, and kept eating. A couple of years ago I lost a button at Bill's party - first time that happened. By late January, early Febuary I was up to about 210. And my wife informed me that I was starting to snore. (A few extra pounds will do that to you.)

What is scary is that virtually all my extra weight goes in one place - my stomach. That is a classic body type which screams high risk of heart attack and stroke. Considering that heart attack and stroke took all 4 of my grandparents, and took my dad, with all of the males involved having problems before 60, and the females before 80 (given the menopausal barrier that is as bad as the guys), this isn't something I should take lightly. (My father lived to 65 - first male in his family to reach 60 - but had his first severe stroke in his 50's. The women lived into their 80's, with major strokes in their late 70's. My mother is in her early 70's and hasn't had problems - yet.)

So in late Febuary I say Greg's link to [link|http://www.fourmilab.to/hackdiet/www/hackdietf.html|The Hacker's Diet], read it, and said that I could do this. (My first diet ever...) I picked up a scale, cut back on sodas at work (I used to pick one up every time I needed to think - to the tune of about 5 per day), made my dinners slightly smaller and started the light, graduated exercise program.

My trend line now says 197.6 and my goal is 180 or removal of love handles, whichever happens first. (I am estimating getting there in July.) I am now at level 9 of that exercise program (no need to push - I expect to be doing it for a while). I can feel the difference, sometimes I skip the elevator and walk up 13 floors just to show myself that it isn't hard any more. Oh yeah, and I can sleep on my back again without snoring. :-)

And I don't want to let my lifestyle sneak up on me again like that...

As for the IWETHEY Lardarse update ... erm, now I'm in my own place and have some bathroom scales, I'm not telling. *guilty look*

However now I'm settled in (did I mention I moved house about nine times between October and February?) I've also settled back in to some regular exercise.

Why don't you create a Bicycle powered power supply for a computer. That way you can peddle the power and have a UPS for backup just in case you fall behind, don't want to lose that data. Then just ride the bike to provide the power. Just a thought.

I'm getting larger as well. 7 Years ago I was like 185, now I am 270+ just about. But the last year I was sick and I was able to lose a few, gain a few, then I got really sick and lost nearly 50 pounds and then gained it back again. The trick, apparently, is to keep them off. I've tried brisk walking, watching what I eat, etc.

I am free now, to choose my own destiny.

New Nuther idea ....
Since getting hit by a car on my bicycle 11 months ago and almost buying the farm, I've started exercising and running and I've dropped from upper 180s at one point to 145 currently. I'm just under 5'7" and I feel great at this weight. So don't wait for a traumatic event -- you can do it now and it's worth it. The only downside was that a year and a half ago I had finally given up, after 15 years of steady weight gain, on ever really getting back to a fit weight and I gave a closet-full of clothes away -- I had to re-buy a whole new wardrobe.

Now that I got my bragging out of the way, back to the idea thing. I can't stand stationary bikes and treadmills and stuff, so I always waited to go out and run or bike on the street -- which takes some effort to plan and is pretty easy to postpone endlessly.

An idea I had a few years ago is to combine a video game back end with an exercise machine front end/user interface so that for example you get to go faster/fly higher/avoid obstacles/whatever depending on how hard you pedal or row or whatever on the exercise machine. Biking in techno-punk traffic, racing pedal-powered airplanes through tight mountain or high-rise terrain, landing a row boat through big surf, even puzzle and first-person shooter type games where part of the control comes from your physical activity input -- the possibilities are endless...

Somebody do this! Would anybody here want to work out in a gym/video arcade setting? Can you beat the guy next to you delivering courier packages through murderous traffic? Can your team's triremes outmanoeuver and ram your opponents'? How many real or fantasy game settings can you envision for human-power controlled vehicles? Would it make sense to fly a fire-breathing dragon via a rowing-machine interface?

There's a couple games at our local Gameworks (they had a job fair there, I went, it was a total bust except for the 1hr free game cards they were handing out - I scored about 5, gave four of them to a friend who actually likes arcade games.) that are very similar to some of your descriptions. First off, there's Dance Dance Revolution - that game can actually get quite areobic at some of the higher skill levels. There were also some "pedal" games that featured a pedal-powered gyrocopter, the faster you pedaled, the faster you went on screen. Didn't try that one.

I was @ 255, and I've managed to take myself down quite a bit. Nope, no weird workout schedules, no fad diets - I'm eating 2000 calories a day right now, and when I hit goal I'll probably go on to eat ~2300 or 2500 calories a day.

Not bad, eh?

Hint: Don't eat much meat, eat lotsa veggies, fruit and grains. My wife went on Jenny Craig (and she's doing really well) and I reverse-engineered their method, and used it myself without a counselor or spending extra $$$. Working great here...

Oh, and don't forget the exercise. Hey, didn't a bunch of you make new year's resolutions?

New Anybody got any bodybuilding experience?
I want to get some serious muscles - I'm thinking about going out for firefighter recruiting - and I'm wondering if anybody here knows a good site with HEALTHY information on building muscle. None of those "take our drug and you'll turn into Arnie" sites - I'm looking for a good combination of weights, diet, and exercise to get pumped.

If you get a $50 set of barbells, etc., at Sears or Target they often come with a booklet listing various exercises. If you're dedicated, and spend the time, you can make yourself tremendously strong with simple tools like that.

I've got a old book by Frank Zane - "Super Bodies in 12 Weeks" - that lists various exercises and techniques. Of course, I've never been able to keep to his schedule.... It's about $25 used at Amazon.

It's hard to go wrong with most of Jack La Lanne's recommendations either. [link|http://www.naturalstrength.com/history/kingoffit.htm|Here]'s a story about some of his techniques and accomplishments.

Stay away from the supplements, IMO. If you want to get huge it's better to get there by hard work than messing with your body chemistry.

Bullworker, it is a flexable, sort of length of rubber. It was used by the late rick rude, and although he had medicinal help I know other strictly natural big folks that use it. Pushups, 100 a day, 4 sets of 25 will give your neck and shoulders that bubble look. Charles Atlas uses isometrics to get big. Isometrics is pushing against an immovable object. Crunches are good also. A great female builder (Pillow) said it takes about 4 hours a day to get big and stay there. Hi pro low carb also is needed.

As Yet Another Backup Plan, I'm going out for firefighting. One of the tests is to exert a certain amount of force with a sledgehammer on a measurement plate in 10 seconds. I want to be able to do it in one swing. :)

Appearance would be nice, but I'm just interested in the strength portion of it. We've got a weight machine in our apartment complex that nobody uses, and I'm working on it - benching about 135 right now.

I've done that, splitting a whole hell of a lot of wood in the process. Had the one-swing chop down to an art.

The problem is, this is a horizontal swing, not a vertical swing, so I can't use gravity (as much) to help. :P

motivational thinking/writing.
I think he has a website too.

The insight I gained from it was that you really need
to focus on changing your lifestyle. I was in a pattern
of getting out of shape and then embarking on truly
punishing workout schedules to get back in shape. Then once
I was in shape...I would figure that it was okay to eat cake
and drink beer.

The difference between doing nothing at all and doing *something* is enormous.
Once you are doing *something* its then a question of degrees whether you
(say) cycle 5 miles or 25 miles.
My sin was that often I would lapse into doing nothing at all for 1-2 years.

I bought a mountain bike last year. If you find a good trail it offers the
thrill of a video game plus gives you a serious workout. AND the consequences
are real if you #@ck up (been straight over the handle bars twice) so the adrenaline is there. It is NOT boring in the same way a gym can be.
There is actually a serious sub-culture out there which I didn't really know about before. A world of nobby tires, ceramic frames, disk brakes, biker sneakers, jelly gloves, full suspensions etc. etc.
The thing I really like about it is that it is surprisingly non-competitive.
Most people seem to be of the mindset that just *being* there is where its at.
Everyone can have a good story whether you make it around in 20 minutes or 2 hours. Finally.....for the most part.....its fairly forgiving on your body.
You won't get the kind of foot/leg/nipple problems which prolonged jogging can give you.
(Note: If your nipples hurt when you jog.......you're probably not quite ready for mountain biking).

For the uninformed, this was my old hobby, picking up foam-padded PVC pipes and bashing other people with them who were trying to do the same to me. A lot of fun, lots of excercise (I always came home tired, sweaty, and in serious pain, not from the boffers, but sore muscles), and I can't find anybody locally who's into this peculiar hobby of mine.

With boffer swords it is too easy to get poked, hit in a sensitive spot, etc.

The SCA swords aren't much heavier, and with a little armour you easily eliminate the vast majority of possibilities for accidental injury.

Cost, well yes. SCA armour isn't very expensive (plus people sometimes lend stuff), but it is more so than boffer swords. Given that you are unemployed, this may be an issue. But I would ask an active member before deciding that you can't afford it.

...and we DO wear padding/mesh in the appropriate areas. The only injuries in the 12 year history of the group I was involved with were self-inflicted, such as the guy who walked backwards off an 18' embankment in full plate armor. :P

Okay, there was one case where a guy's weapon was called "nonspec" (it had PVC showing) and he was told to a) fix the weapon, b) not use the weapon, or c) leave the game. He refused, tried, was restrained, and then handed over to the friendly police officer who liked to watch us. Wasn't charged with anything, but we didn't see their face around those parts again... Something about a possible assault 'n battery charge being pressed.

I was only briefly involved in the SCA, and that was a long time ago. But I seem to remember that injuries there are non-existent to rare as well.

I have never been involved in boffer fighting. I have just seen it a couple of times.

Made a big Difference in how I look at Weight... period.

Being FAT, is not something to be suffered through, but something to be managed!

I am successful, in implementing lots O stuff... Why the HELL can I NOT manage my weight...

As of now it is a project to be managed. I only eat when I am hungry... distinguishing Hunger and thirst is a needed skill there. I only eat until I am satiated. Whatever it is, only till I am NOT hungry anymore... and NOT FULL... oh yeah... Drink plenty of Fluids... Water, Diet Mountain Dew, Diet Coke, Unsweetened Brewed Iced Tea, Crystal Light... you get the drift.

Edit= BTW, I look alot different than when that picture was taken...
