What is it with the misperception around women's shoes?
I've recently gotten razzed for buying a few pair of pumps for work. They're hard to walk in, they hurt my feet, but they're part of the uniform. Equate them to ties. You dont like them, but you're expected to wear them as part of the professional uniform. And I bet you have more than one or two. Different ties for different shirts and suits. Same thing for shoes. I would hardly call my shoes "entertainment". Then again, I dont think my dishes are very entertaining, either.

C'mon lady, get with the cliche
Going all intellectual on this stuff just makes life harder for hundreds of cartoonists and thousands of humorists.
You're as bad as L who insists there's no special relationship between women and chocolate.
Well, at least we'll always have Imelda Marcos . . .

Oh Fine. The chocolate thing I'll give you.
And there is intellectual rationale behind this relationship, but I'll spare you and play the game.
Now if you excuse me, I'm off to go buy some shoes and chocolate and get a manny and peddy. And when I get home I'll put on my pretty, pretty apron and new 4 inch heels and cook my family a delicious meal, complete with a homemade layer cake.
Then later, I will please my man (while wearing the shoes) and do the laundry. All with a happy, content, knowing, feminine smile on my face.

Keep in mind now, the 4-inch heels go with dark thigh-high stockings and not much else.

Hey, it's you who wanted to do the Stepford thing.
I was thinking of the market. Every engineer at NASA/JPL would be lining up to get one of those Stepford clones, and they'd pay plenty for 'em too!
Years ago I'd now and then visit Liz Hargroves "Seminars for Singles" over in Pasadena. The place was always full of engineers and women who wouldn't touch an engineer with a boat hook because they used to be married to one.
As for the whip, I don't remember. If I have one It'd be too hard to find so I'll just buy a new one (with "new whip"tm fresh leather smell). Remember where I live - we've got plenty of manufacturers of and outlets for that sort of gear here in the "Creative Capital of the World".
A woman I used to work with bought her dope from a bearded and tatooed craftsman of just such leather and chrome riveted accessories. She asked him "how do you know these things work?". He replied, "Me and my boyfriend, we try out every one just to make sure".

At this point I should mention I missed an opportunity.
I think I probably have more shoes than most males. I realized that the other day when I was deciding which to wear as I've just started to try to match them to what I wear, instead of throwing on whichever smelly pair I feel like being comfortable in. It's taken me a marriage separation to get to this point, note.
And yes, when I did wear ties, I tried to match them to my shirt.
But we all know Andrew is full of cliches. :-)

You have more than two?
One dress, one casual - that's all most men need. A hard work'n bloke would have a pair of work shoes (or boots) and could be excused for having a dress pair too (the ones he got married in) but beyond that is really a bit much, don't ya think?

Plus assorted random Bad Ideas (too small/let the water in/uncomfortable etc)
Some people might walk the dog/wash the car/do the gardening in either their work shoes or their posh home shoes, but I don't.

Ive read long descriptions of their demise . . .
. . and why they folded. A big subscription promotion for one arrived in the mail 2 days after they announced end of publication so I read the promo out of curiosity.
Crockery was not a feature, never mind any mention of actually washing it yourself (that'd surely wash off your expensive skin cream too, and could damage your manicure).

Hmm. I wonder what I've forgotten.

Meh, if we're counting everything...
Brownish comfortable somewhat-like-sneakers-but-less-casual-than-that Sketchers - I wear these pretty much every day.
Black shiny things for wearing with a suit - I can't remember the last time I wore these.
Brown leather for things I don't want to wear with the black - ditto.
White tenny things for working out - *cough* ditto
Moccasins for around the house - every day
Leather boots for rainy/snowy/cold days - a few weeks ago
Ginormous rubber/leather things for shoveling snow - last year
Also assorted older tennis shoes and so on kept for grubby jobs - last year, but it's getting to be that time again.
If you live in LA and don't do anything active, then yes, two pair might be sufficient.

Living in LA, it also helps keep the count down . . .
. . that I don't wear any shoes at all unless I'm leaving the house. I compensate by having only one pair of shoes, Florshiem dress shoes, but I admit I'm contemplating getting a pair of more casual shoes with softer soles.
On the other hand, we needn't count shoes forced on one for special purposes.

Three, up here - add warm boots for mid-winter.
OK, make that four, for those of us with (more or less forced-upon-us) outdoors hobbies: Sandals - for summer biking, outings to the play-park, etc.
Whaddayamean, "old school"?!?
This is, as opposed to those newfangled fashion victims' way, how Men live. (Well, except that four is, admittedly, pretty much at the extreme upper limit.)

The tie is doomed.
In the Los Angeles Times Sunday magazine West of a week ago there was an article on ties by a guy who mentioned being rejected on a first date because he forgot to take his off after a business meeting.
I'm old enough to wear a tie and not look weird but younger guys wouldn't dare - and I would never wear one on a date. Of course if the tie goes out in Los Angeles it will soon be gone worldwide - except perhaps in Japan and the Financial district of London.
Even I would never wear a dark tie with a white shirt. You dress like that and everyone thinks you're a Mormon missionary. No danger though, I don't own a white shirt.

I have a closet full of ties I don't hardly wear anymore
My favorite was my anti-corporate corporate tie I got from a street vendor in NO. I got rid of it a while ago, but from what I remember it was made of plastic and equated time with money, etc.
Of course, I only wore it once or twice.

My last family funeral was a no tie affair
Ties were something I would have previously thought decorum required. Especially in the case of my grandmother, the 97 year old matriarch of our tribe. Nope, the only people wearing ties were the staff of the funeral parlor and one or two of the oldest of her extended brood*.
*78 descendents showed up at the last family picnic 30 years ago.
