Memory leaks in Firefox 2.0.0.2 and Thunderbird 1.5.0.10
It's annoying.
Windows 2k + SP4
Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 had an 85 MB image in RAM just now. It would also periodically hit the CPU at 15-20% for no apparent reason. On restarting it, it dropped to 30 MB. Firefox 2.0.0.2 was at 495 MB and it dropped to 100 MB (with the same tabs open).
Both of them have only been running about 3 days.
It certainly would be nice if they fixed these leaks. It's been going on for years. :-(
I've seen tools like [link|http://dbaron.org/log/2006-05|this], but have never used them (mainly because I'm not sure what I'd do with them).
Does anyone have any tips to share other than restarting these apps every couple of days?
Cheers, Scott.

Re: Memory leaks in Firefox 2.0.0.2 and Thunderbird 1.5.0.10
I don't use Thunderbird myself (since I'm on Linux, I use Evolution)...But I generally use my Firefox (v1.5.0.9) browser so much during the day that I run it out of memory myself. Opening/closing tabs, forward-only browsing in a couple of tabs to the point where there are a few hundred pages to go to get back to the first page (even though only 30-ish are displayed on the back button)...Doing stuff like that will get you to the point where FF will start opening windows on its own when you click on a link that shouldn't create a new window. Closing that window will close all of FF, as if there weren't multiple windows open.
It's annoying, but something I'm aware of because I do use FF so damn much (being a web dev guy.) Since I haven't the time to go around debugging other people's work, I just accept it and move on. Not that you necessarily should; just relating my experiences.

Thanks.
Both of them have eaten another 20-30+ MB in the last 2 hours. I'll see what I can figure out when I get a chance.
Cheers, Scott. (Who has 2 GB of RAM in this machine. It crawls when these things get too hungry.)

Only Talkback in TB, several in FF.
Talkback 1.5.0.10 is in Thunderbird. I just added Leak Monitor 0.3.6 to both, but I don't imagine it's going to tell me much of anything.
In addition to Leak Monitor, FF 2.0.0.2 has:
Adblock Plus 0.7.2.4 Fasterfox 2.0.0 Flashblock 1.5.2 Tab Mix Plus 0.3.5.2 Table2Clipboard 0.0.2.1
Spellbound and Talkback 2.0.0.2 are disabled. I had trouble with Spellbound [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=262912|before] and the version I was using apparently isn't necessary for the 2.x branch of Firefox.
I'm using the default themes in both.
In Thunderbird, I can see a general trend in increasing memory usage after each check of my POP account, but it's not a constant increase.
I wouldn't be surprised if the FF extensions cause problems, but I'll bet there's a fundamental leak in the base code.
Cheers, Scott.

I'm rapidly growing annoyed at FF
The quality of implementation of TextArea widget on FF on Mac is SHIT. It has been since Navigator. Key repeate rate and general responsiveness is awful. Rendering/refresh bugs remain - been there since Navigator 3. Does nobody fix shit anymore?
As a browser it is OK. As a writing tool it is just fuckin' miserable.
I'm back to Safari full time.

It sucks.
Use Camino if you're desperate for Gecko.
Safari is a better browser for OS X - not least because it's wired up to the Text Services stuffs.
Actually, I'm currently using WebKit nightlies and it's faster. And has a nicer icon.

Camino sucks worse than FF.
I had nothing but crashes and freezes when I tried to use it.
FF on OS X is fine for me. I get occasionally weird Javascript slowdowns if I leave FF on Linux running for weeks, but then again I also run a metric ass load of extensions for web development.

That raises the question
what exactly is the difference between a metric assload and a metric buttload? Which is the unit unit? Is an assload equal to 10 butt loads, or 1 Dbuttload? Or is it the other way around? Or is it all base two, so 1 assload = 1 buttload X 2^10? Also, what are the SI symbols for the two units? AL and BL?
I think we need to settle this now, to avoid confusion in the future. There is nothing more important than this question right now... because if you can't agree on units, you'll crash onto the surface of Mars.

Good point
Then there's the archaic "arseload".

The difference is...
... whether or not you get called by the FCC for saying it during Saturday morning cartoons.

Why would you get called by the FCC?
Metric assload: the amount of stuff one donkey can carry measured in metric units.
Ass is by no means a censorable word.
In fact, reading Wind in the Willows last night to my daughter, ass is used quite often as in 'Toad will make himeslf a perfect ass'.

Perhaps, but put FF and Safari side by side
and try entering a post on iwethey. FF's text area widget will seem intolerably slow.
Been that way forever.

Some About:Config tweaks for memory usage in FF.
[link|http://techpatterns.com/forums/about623.html|TechPatterns] has some tips and a link to a Mozillazine thread about it.
I suspect in my case it's related to at least a few things:
I have Session Manager and Crash Recovery in TabMixPlus enabled. They have to know what to restore after shutdown, so they must keep a current picture of the current tabs somewhere. Since many of my tabs auto-refresh whether I want them to or not (various newspapers, etc.), it seems reasonable that that's a big part of the increasing memory usage. (I would think the code would be smart enough to overwrite the previous tab cache though.)
I'm a big fan of TMP, SM and CR so I don't know if I'm willing to make the trade-off of turning off those features for a smaller footprint.
I'll have to check my settings for A:C and see if that makes a difference as well.
In short, FF may be working as designed when my combination of extensions and settings are used. :-/
HTH.
Cheers, Scott.

Don't see much of a memory problem on OS/2, but.....
... what I have seen the most of is increasing CPU usage if I leave it running all the time. This usually happens after I start get moments of CPU hogging, bogging the entire system down at times.
When I first start FF, CPU usage is typically about 10%. After several hours of leaving it running, I will start to see CPU usage creep up until it gets to as high as 75%. That's when the entire system becomes sluggish, with momentary spikes of 100% CPU usage. #7 on that list of hints given in the quoted section ("Once in a while, close the browser completely and re-open it."), is usually the cure for this.
