Mate in 2.
I've drawn the following board with white pieces capital, black small. Black is moving down the board, white up White to move and checkmate in 2 moves. \n (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (H)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (8) | | | | | | | | | (8)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (7) | | | | | | | | | (7)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (6) | | | | | | | | | (6)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (5) | | | | K | | | | | (5)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (4) | | | | | | | | | (4)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (3) | | | | | k | p | | R | (3)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (2) | | | | | | | | Q | (2)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (1) | | | | | | | | | (1)\n --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---\n (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (H)\n Background. This was in a homework set for a co-worker's son from the son's chess teacher. This 8 year old got it in about 3 minutes. I got it on my own fairly quickly, but had to admit that it is a lot trickier than it looks. Multiple others have been well and truly stumped. (Some have gotten it, but with hints and assistance...) Cheers, Ben PS Added labels...

dunno the issue, whites move?
Q moves diagonal parks between p&k, cant be touched, and k can only move one square at a time, 30 seconds (prolly wrong answer) thanx, bill

The issue is finding mate in 2
Yes, the situation is obviously won and a large number of moves start a win.
But there is only one way to guarantee a win in 2 moves. Find it.
This could be part of a more complex board, Black might have other stuff elsewhere (eg a pawn that can't readily be stopped from queening) so finding the win in 2 moves is important.
Cheers, Ben

well if
Q moves between k and p only the k can move which allows Q to eat pawn and either the k kills Q, moves down one square (but Q can get him) move up one square and K can get him or move sideways Q can get him. What other option do they have? Keep it out of the subject line or CRC will start whining again :-) thanx, bill

You are taking more than 2 moves to win.
The sequence is white moves, black moves, then white delivers checkmate. If you take longer than that, then you haven't found the answer.
FYI an 8 year old kid did this problem in 3 minutes.

Re: You are taking more than 2 moves to win.
K moves to block k from the left, leaving k one legal move...

Let's put that in algebraic notation...
I'll edit this one as well since it makes explicit a partial attempt on the problem.
Remember that it is only a solution once you can fill in that mysterious second move and deliver checkmate.

I'll hide my response to that in an edit then...
If anyone thinks that they have a full solution, they can hide it in the same way.
