Geckos
We get these tiny geckos now. They don't show up on the dog's radar.
Tiny things always show up in the winter. Then when the weather warms up, they go back outside
In the old house, we got a mouse, the cat caught it, played with it, and lost it again. I drug it out from behind the stove, killed with the broom. The cat played with it anyway, for a while.
Finally, the cat got bored and I put the mouse in the garbage.

When I was stationed in Guam...
I had several running around the house. Found eggs in the window track. Of course that was nothing next to finding a live monitor lizard (about 2 feet long) hiding in the engine compartment of my car. luckily for him I had decided to check my oil that day.

I have a soft spot for reptiles
Every spring we take our herpetology class out to western Mich to collect and identify herps- mostly salamanders, newts, snakes, frogs and turtles. We also collect embryos, if we can find them, and bring them back to the lab to monitor their development. It's great fun. I always end up getting bit-last year it was a hog-nosed snake. The weather's warming up so we should be out there in a few weeks. Cant wait!

Ummm, one thing I've been thinking for awhile . .
This outfit that's lining you up with engineers - from what I've been gathering here, you'd be sending most of the engineers I've known (and I've known a hell of a lot of them) screaming into the night. Not sure just what would be right (thinking about it) but I've got my doubts about engineers.

Ironic - I was thinking the same thing this morning. Prepare yourself now to enter into my world of self analysis. Went out with Doug the engineer last night. A friend of mine took a new position so we had a party for her. There was also a MSU pep rally going on at the bar- it was very crowded and very loud. I dont get out much, so I was having a grand old time, singing the MSU fight song and laughing with the girls. Doug sat there like a lump. Then we started talking about tumors and boils and such and we whipped the group up into a frenzy of hysterical laughter. Doug continued to sit there like a lump, but he was tense, like a rabbit ready to bolt. Sigh. I think this is the last I'll see of old Doug.
So as far as engineers go, maybe you're right. I think I'm too, ummm, whats the right word here? Immature? Provoking? Passionate? Animated. Yeah, I'm too animated for this breed of men. On paper we seem to match up very well. I'm bright. I have 2 advanced degrees. I think like an engineer (very linear and in absolutes)but my cognitive patterns dont transfer to my behavior. I'm very passionate about having fun. I love practical jokes. I think boils are worthy of discussion and they amuse me. Diving for a salamander into a puddle of mud makes me happy. I dont like politics or economics and prefer to talk about how we humans relate to our natural world. Everything else to me is just fluff.
My absolute main priority is being a mother and my goal is to raise my kids in such a way that doesnt result in years of therapy when they grow up. And so far, I think I'm doing a damn good job. Family is important to me and I would love to have someone in my life to share this all with. And a little sex every now and then would be nice. Dont think that's asking too much.
My ex was the proverbial Peter Pan. Was in his mid 40's and maintained the belief that he was going to be the next Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi or Ronnie Van Zant. Grow up already, quit drinking and cut your hair! You dont look cool! You look like Grandpa Walton! He was the exact opposite of an engineer. I think I need to find some middle ground, here.
So where does this leave me? I've blown through my list of engineers Eharmony came up with and now they say they cant find any new matches for me. Not a one in southeast Michigan!!!
So, what do you think? Am I destined to be single? Where *IS* he already?!? I'm tired of looking!!

Don't give up on him yet.
He may just take a while to get comfortable around groups of people. He may not like bars much.
Try lunch again, take things slowly, and see how it goes. You don't have to enjoy all the same things to be a good couple.

It's really his job (if he's still interested) to find out if he's been disqualified for poor performance under party stress. It only takes a few moments to find out where you stand - and if you can't take rejection you shouldn't be dating. My guess is he's shaking in his boots hoping this is over.

Bullshit.
Any couple who have a baseline physical attraction can start, but to maintain any sense of togetherness you HAVE to enjoy a large percentage of the same things. If not, this really means you are in it for the sex, and when someone else comes along that provides both the sex AND the companionship, you are gone.
Drop the engineer. He is the far extreme of your ex, and is the "safe" rebound material, but you have no long term hope.
Anyone who varies between sitting like a lump, and being terrified and about to bolt, needs a lot more on the pyche side than you are willing to provide, especially since your kids are your priority.
Modify your profile on the dating service a bit. Push up your fun-loving categories, your willingness to take a chance, etc. And go have some fun.

Reread what I wrote.
I said all the same things.
You make some good points, but there's more to a relationship than whether they both enjoy and feel comfortable in crowded noisy bars or not. It's safe to say, isn't it, that our spouses don't enjoy doing stuff on the internet as much as we do? That doesn't mean we aren't compatible.
Remember, they chose each other because they already had a lot in common.

I'm not saying that she and Doug the Engineer are a perfect match. I'm just saying she (and he) should give it more time to see what happens. She doesn't know why he was antsy.
But it really depends on what they each are looking for. My father's mother got married during the Great Depression so that she would have a roof over her head. Charles got married to have an heir.
If bionerd is looking for someone to go to rowdy bars and sing drinking songs with when she's 65, then DtE might not be a good match. That sounds more like her ex to me. Well I can discuss a really good boil with the next guy as well as the various scars, tumors zits lesions and tits vs ass. I Doug calls and gives a huge grin when he see's you again stuff might happen.
If not, come to the party in July, a couple of people around here are single and at least one will show up there. You are gonna be out of luck about the quit drinkin, hair part as thats what we mostly do and thems that still has hair grows it as needed.
There is a guy for you out there, you just hanvt caught him stalking you yet.

Not too crazy about those in the helping professions
I have a confession to make- not only do I do the biology thing, I'm also a practicing psychotherapist. I do both part time. I do some work for the university and also work for an EAP company doing telephonic counseling and mass casualty disaster response- mostly plane crashes. People who work in the helping professions are full of neuroses- I dont want to date one. I am one.

Reminds me of a theory of my uncle's
He said that people take psychology courses because they want to understand their problems. Most people figure themselves out after a course or 2 and do something else. Some people's problems are more complex so they take more courses. And then when they've figured themselves out they say, "What do I do for a degree? Well I have all of these psychology courses..."
This uncle had a PhD in psychology and was a prime example of his own theory.

It's looking bleak out there for toy software, including my own - despite precautions.
So far, two of my Droogies are now safely ensconced on new Apples (which I can't afford until I Must). As these two, especially, *need* reliable web access, I'm relieved for them. Gawd, what about the Millions??

Although what you say is partly true, I add more value to that charity than it could do on its own, since I'm *not* being paid what I'm worth. In addition, the organization adds value through its economies of scale (and 40 other people on staff whose contributed value is more than what they're paid).

A standard reference dictionary . . .
. . can't be expected to contain all the arcane technical terms of every esoteric specialty.
On the other hand, Ms BioNerd appears to be deeply involved in two separate specialties to which the phrase "no guts, no glory" applies. No wonder engineers go screaming into the night.

...and yes, if that's what characterlogical means, I guess I'd have to say we have a lot of that around here.
OTOH, I do have to wonder about the normative value of the word "maladaptive". I'm not sure that it applies universally to "patterns of inner experience and behaviour that deviate from the [norms of one's cultural milieux]". Sometimes that's actually really healthy.

Most people on this forum work in IT and you have to be fairly contrary to want to study machine logic for a living. And this board seems to attract the particularly contrary. You noticed this yourself.

The hair really wasnt the issue
It became a symbol of his refusal to grow up. I generally like long hair on men. Or short hair. Or no hair. Hell, I'm not picky. And drinking is fine- it's the alcoholism I have a problem with. Without going into all the gory details in a public forum, he wanted a parent instead of a partner. And I didnt want that. 'Nuff said for now.
No call from DtE yet and I'm not expecting one. As Andrew said, I think he went screaming into the night. I do, occassionally, tend to have that effect on men.
Just where is this party? Near Lambertville NJ at all? I'm thinking about it.

I knew Gifford was Maxim's CEO, but I didn't know he ran Intersil and was co-founder of AMD.
