You'd be surprised.
I actually do use the gear box to slow down, primarily.
I only use the brakes if it appears I cannot slow the car down with downshifting.
I actually don't use the clutch either (most of the time), instead do sync-shifting. (up and down)
You'd be amazed at how many people are amazed I don't grind gears doing it this way.
