Indiana's bad, but Michigan's the worst.
Usually up here the first snow makes hoosiers lose their fucking minds. But not from going too slow or even knowing where the fucking brake is. On the day of my rant below there were 142 accidents in Fort Wayne on the evening commute (MSA pop is around 250,000 to give you some idea of how bad that is). Fuckers drive 90 on ice. And Michigan? Forgettaboutit. You can drive 90 mph in bad weather on I-94 and get passed by troopers going after the real speeders.

That's not worse, it is BETTER.
At least you are not getting a ticket... right?
BTW, I ahve been told by out of staters that ride with me, heck even in staters, that my driving can be a bit aggressive from time to time. Scott, Drew, am I off base here?

Though the thought of riding with a self-confessed "agressive driver" through the mountains in western PA does give me pause. There's some really long downgrades there that are just twisty enough that you don't realize you've been going downhill for several miles.

You'd be surprised.
I actually do use the gear box to slow down, primarily.
I only use the brakes if it appears I cannot slow the car down with downshifting.
I actually don't use the clutch either (most of the time), instead do sync-shifting. (up and down)
You'd be amazed at how many people are amazed I don't grind gears doing it this way.

One of the great pleasures . .
. . is taking a flatlander from Oklahoma or some such place for a brisk drive across the Angeles Crest. It's especially fun if you've got a macho one who tries not to show fear - at least for the first mile or two.
Of course, having once driven from the mouth of Big Tujunga Canyon to the Wrightwood ski resort in 55 minutes in an XK150 Jaguar exceeding 100mph several times on the Crest, I could probably have terrified just about anyone.

Of course, my hero at the time . .
. . was a Belgian race car driver named Gendebien. One year he was competing in the Monte Carlo Ralley. The times for the portion through the Alps was set the day before the run. That night it rained, and then froze.
More than half the cars were disqualified for being late. No car made time. Gendebien was disqualified for being early. He did not have good timing information because his navigator spent the trip curled in a fetal position on the floor boards.
Public outcry eventually forced the race organizers to award him a substantial prize dispite the disqualification.

There used to be three entrances . .
. . Big Tujunga Canyon, Angeles Crest Hightway (clearly marked junction with the 210 Foothill Freeway in La Cañada/Flintridge) and San Grabriel Canyon from Azusa but that last one has been washed out for many years and too expensive to repair.
It climbs steeply up to the Mount Wilson road where the observatories are and continues on to Wrightwood in San Bernadeno county following the crests of the mountains pretty much all the way. Very up, down and twisty the whole way.
From the Mount Wilson observatory grounds (I used to know where there was a hole in the fence) you can look practically straight down on Pasadena, and there was a spot I used to go where you could see well over 1000 square miles of city lights.

noted, closest to tht description
was coming across from highway 5 to Monterey,looking at map quest is might have been the pacheco pass highway, was to small for a highway to my mind, winding, totally fogged and by the timeI got to the bottom the drums on my 1964 wildcat were glowing red and you could smell the tranny fluid cooking. A road I would have loved to try without 3 screaming women and some dodgy steering. A fiat spyder or a 70's citroen would be great.

Suicide Alley, the "Pacheco Pass" road.
..or one of a number of those. Notorious for lots of head-ons; often with trucks. Prolly worse with the new crop of cluless idiots in UAVs, playing out Tee Vee ads for their $40K truck, still wet-behind-ears / imagining invincibility came with the expen$ive ignition key.
Flying down that, in fog, and WITH PASSENGERS, just to feed the testosterone monkey? strikes me as fucking Stupid er somewhat unwise. No chauffer gig fer you. Yer lucky your (screaming ... intelligent) hostages didn't eliminate you on the first decent straight part, where they might grab the wheel.
(No local jury would have convicted them ;-)

You drive like me
And I've never gotten a ticket. I've been pulled over a few times, though, and have learned that a big smile and some fast talking goes a long way. Everyone in MI drives this way. To us, the speed limit is simply a recommendation. I've driven to NYC several times, going through the mountains of PA with my cruise control set on 85. It's a damn nuisance if I have to break.

The Car Guys on 'SUV' (Urban Assault Vehicle) Ads
Spent a column advocating a suit against mfgs for their depiction of assholes driving these turn-turtle deathtraps exactly as you describe.
I don't know how closely they follow stats (their MIT degrees suggest they know how to read those) - but apparently they've received lots of similar reports, of the first-person kind.
Having seen samples of those ads, and given the hyper-suggestibility of our fellow manic consumers - I naturally agree with them that these ads are pure propaganda depicting the repeal of certain laws of physics - clearly directed to people who don't even know which ones.
Stupid fuckers have never heard of coefficient of friction, thus have No Idea what that might have to do with 5000# atop 4 tiny patches of rubber IN MOTION. Too dumb to live.
Now if they could just manage their suicides without taking out the sane(r).. it'd be All Good.
