I was shocked to find that it wasn't in general usage in the USA.
Incidentally your translation is wrong, most of the time when I billeted it was for smaller outings like like highschool choir trips. A couple of cities over does not a foreign exchange make.
As for why Canada bothered to do exchanges within the country, it was intended as a way to defuse English-French tensions. I don't know whether they still are doing it though.
