New Shredded cabbage and noodles as a side dish for the spag?
Get a couple heads of cabbage and shred them finely.
Boil a couple bags of thin egg noodles.
Fry the cabbage a little in some oil with as much garlic and pepper as you like. Use a large roasting pan.
Toss in the noodles and mix.
Finish in the oven, covered, until tender.
You can dress it up with a little chunk tuna or shredded meat if you like but is unnecessary.
A couple large roasting pans, 3 at the max should do it.
Except for boiling the noodles, do all the cooking in the roasting pans.
New spag is for another night, good suggestion though

New Beans and rice?
Garlic to taste, 8 or 10 large diced onions, sauteed.
Canned diced tomatoes to taste (in quantity, using canned tomatoes is worth it to me. YMMV.)
10 kilo sack of rice. 5 kilo sack of dried black or red beans, I like black.
Soak the beans over night. Bring the beans to a hard boil for about 5 min before you use them.
Divvy up ingrediants in large pots or roasting pans. Add 2 parts water to one part rice.
Add salt, pepper, optional hot sauce. Cook covered, stirring occasionally. If you use the roasting pans, you can bring to a boil on the stove, and put it in the oven at 275. Turn mixture over at 15 min or so for a large roaster and check it at 25 min.

I usually eyeball the ingredients so I don't have real measurements. Sorry.
New good thought, a couple of smoked pork hocks as well

New Billet is a specifically Canadian word
It might be better known now, but when I was a kid I found out through experience that a word that seems to be universally known through Canada was not recognized in the USA. In fact [link|http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=billet&r=67|http://dictionary.re...rch?q=billet&r=67] demonstrates that the Canadian usage of "to billet" as a verb applying to lodging non-soldiers is not widely recognized elsewhere.

Ben

New Funny, I thought it was the first part of a compound word:
billet-aluminum

Or have I been watching too much American Hot Rod again?

New It is not
The common Canadian usage refers to putting people up in other people's houses. Your billet is the person you are staying with or who is staying with you. Billeting is the act of staying with someone or having people stay with you.

Most Canadians become familiar with the word during highschool trips. Frequently two schools will work out an arrangement where one visits the other and the other visits the first, each billeting the other. (Saving both the cost of hotels.) Given Open House Canada exchanges between different parts of Canada, the word has spread across Canada.

US schools do the same thing, but don't seem to have a specific word for it.

Cheers,
Ben

New Can we auto-add The Sign whenever Ben's reading?
Ben, I was in the military for eight years. I know what billeting is.

BTW In the U.S. the term is "foreign[1] exchange program". Those who participate are "exchange students".

[1] No one bothers to do an exchange somewhere else in the same country.

New I didn't know if the word was used in the US military
I was shocked to find that it wasn't in general usage in the USA.

Incidentally your translation is wrong, most of the time when I billeted it was for smaller outings like like highschool choir trips. A couple of cities over does not a foreign exchange make.

As for why Canada bothered to do exchanges within the country, it was intended as a way to defuse English-French tensions. I don't know whether they still are doing it though.

Cheers,
Ben

New They are
and, it's not just the state that's doing it. I came across it as part of a series of model parliaments organised by the United Church of Canada that I attended while in high school.

Example chants:

Yes yes yes we do, we've got spirit how 'bout you?

which, of course, became

Yes yes yes we do, we drink spirits how 'bout you?

There were numerous other bastardisations that I and my fellow travellers in the corrupt teenage practices of sex and drugs and rock and roll came up with...
