New MESSAGE RECEIVED loud & clear (& consistent) thanks all

I accept all your comments (blunt as well as commentaries). Thanks for all your perspectives.

Consider this a dead-horse.

New In my defence ...
I believe I was not in essence, claiming any thing different about them than what happened with Microsoft during the 'BARKTO' affair of which I was a participant.

BARKTO and others, it was latter admited, were executives of MS who adopted aliases organised by MS public relations man Rick Segal, & claimed to be customers of competing vendors. Their goal was to go into discussion groups to attack these competitors.

But, as already said. The horse is now dead.

Lets get back to normal <grin>

Later info that emerged via Will Zachmann that other execs including Ballmer & Gates had admitted to doing similar.

New You were in on the Barkto scam?
Wow. You must know Irv Spalten, Bob St. John, Scott Garfinkle perhaps?

How 'bout Brad Wardell? Heh... you HAVE to know Bob Germer;)

I also have had passing communications with David Barnes, and a few others, though Barkto was all well before my time (I started getting involved in the online warp community '95-'96).

If you're curious, Bob St. John's now one of the owners of Serenity Systems, who are publishing that OEM version of OS/2 I keep yapping about. Irv retired last year, and is now being curmudgeonly on the OS/2 newsgroups with the FUD4 (if you don't know, go google on coo.advocacy or .misc, and look for David D. Huff, Tim Martin, David T. Johnson, RJ Friedman, or one of many sock puppets of the above).

You might even know Claude; he was out of IBM Montreal. Good guy.

New Not in on the scam

I was in product support in IBM A/P & OS/2 Warp was one of our babies, I had been in contact with & supporting Dave Whittle & Dave Barnes (to a much lesser extent).

I had been attempting to back them up in Canopus, under the propaganda & abuse tirade they were under at the time.

Dave Whittle either did or was close to an emotional breakdown. I know his manager told him to go take a month or more leave at the tail end of the affair.

Microsoft also nailed William Zachmann later, had him fired as technical editor from one of the larger PC magazines - that was lousey because he was always super careful at how he handled MS & what he said about them, but for that job, it wan't enough.

Cheers

Doug
(I was also going to be the country product manager for Workplace OS but as well know Lou G pulled the plug.)

New Sorry, when I say "in on" I was saying
"you were there". I heard it was really nasty.

It's still going on, though at this point I think it's more of a skunkworks than actual policy like it was for Barkto.

If you're interested, you should talk to Mark at Orion Solutions (Australian distributor); I'm sure you could talk him into spinning you an assessment version of eComStation. We're very close to release of 1.1, and I think you'll find the work we've done to be pretty nice.

New Nasty <g> It was the most vicious thing I ever experienced

outside of physical combat.

It always gets ugly when people who have hidden agendas, false ids and apparently no scruples about how & what they want to achieve, invade ordinary people going about their normal participation in places like canopus was.

Barkto left me with a very 'bent' attitude to Microsoft and to their tactics. It didn't help that they kept refining the practices & expanding their targets. (Java & that infamous Gates remark 'cut off their air supply', then how they sucessfully out manouvered a disctrict court judge (Jackson) over Win98 integration).

Cheers

Doug
