New No
But SNMP poller that has to poll millions of objects on tens of thousands of targets is. C++ may suck at string manipulation (even that can be remedied with good libraries (not STL)). But, in the hands of a good programmer, it's a sharp tool. Much like Java, C++ is what you make of it. Want garbage collection? Use a library. Want super-fast memory allocation, pre-sorted according to chunk size? Use another library. The fact that Java has library built into the language does not make it unique or particularly good.

things will never get back to normal, and that they already have.
New But, in the hands of a good programmer, it's a sharp tool.
And as the number of pairs of hands increases, the opportunities for screwing things up increases as well. Not that I'm disputing your example of a good place to use C++.

"it's not that hard to operate on a patient with AIDS - you just have to be careful and limit the number of hands in the operating field"
