Can use either a color ctdge or B&W - comes with a 'safe' even: snapclosed box w/ elastomer at bottom which pretty well seals the jets. Uses ubiquitous BC-02 refills for BW and driver is smart enough to know which ctdge is in use. 10 seconds to swap.

I don't print a lot, but in ~ a year thus far, wherein I used about half the color and put in a new BW - it's never even glitched. Including a few 25pp .pdfs

BTW - the $50 price for entire new printer (I bought a spare, still in box) = about $18 more than price of a new color refill! Crazy; for me it means:

The printer is the new commodity - it's free so you buy the razor blades. Haven't even looked at refilling the BW ctdge. Screw HP - that's their plan for us. $400 for a new printer ??? Hah.

I guess the newer $60 printers ought to do 1440 too. No one will 'fix' printers anymore, now.. fill up the landfills with YAN new unrecycleable gadget.

I don't know what it 'means' either..
