Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Yes, they're still made in quantity.
Many of my clients have a half dozen external modems on their systems, some for call-in, some for call-out and some for fax out. The two brands used are US Robotics and Multi Tech. I strongly prefer the Multi Tech, they're a lot smaller and they connect with everything - except sometimes US Robotics. One of my clients recently had to change his USR fax-out modem to Multi Tech because he was getting too many fax failures.

New I guess I'm just living right
I have two USR internal modems..one older Sportster 56K, and a newer V92 internal. Used both for internet and faxing before the era of the cable modem, and still use one or the other for faxing. And have never had a connection problem. (Configuration problems? Occasionally, but never a connection problem.)

Just lucky, I guess.

Of course, none of these are, or will ever be, that scourge of connectivity euphemistically referred to as the WinModem!
jb4
shrub●bish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New Nothing to do with luck
When USR inventing 56K signalling, they made a deal with the ISPs to populate the POPs with banks of their equipment. This then pushed the end users to get USR equipment. Then when the competition came around, they introduced what they claimed was compatible equipment, along with their own extensions.

But everyone was supposed to be USR compatible 1st.
