ISP changes causing me headaches
Our main ISP changed to an in-house dial-up number, supposedly to help out people like me who like to use the Internet a lot. However, the problem is that the dial-up number I have now won't give me a faster speed.
My US Robotics V.90 modem wouldn't even connect hardly at all. It would make 2 attempts, for high speed, and then drop to slow speed but time out without connecting. John had to disable it for high speed so that it only goes for slower speed, and as a result, I can connect now, but I only get 26.8 or so. I had been getting 38.8.
Talking with the ISP owner (local service), he insists that his equipment doesn't like US Robotics stuff, and that if I had a Lucent or Rockwell modem it would work. I use external modems, do they even still sell these types in external mode?
Or does anyone have one lying around they might be willing to sell cheaply? I was just starting to cheer up when this happened, and now I'm down again. I know it's my fault for letting it bring me down, but it seems that every time our local ISP makes changes for the "better" they make things worse for me. (sigh).
Any help, advice, or etc. is appreciated on this issue.

Ask him why he hasn't upgraded yet.
Surely there are a lot of USRobotics modems still around. I bet if you were to contact USRobotics, they would say 'his modems are faulty'.

note to both US robotics are in their own class
due to patents, one modem maker was cloned via licencing by everyone except US robotics who went their own way. (old timers disease makes me forget who the modem maker was) So US robotics to US robotics is fine, negotiation hell with everyone else. My preference was always telebit to 19.5 then went to lan/wan after that :-) thanx, bill

He admits it's his problem
The ISP guy does, but John thinks we can solve it by going out this weekend and getting me a different modem. The ISP guy is a small local service, and I guess he can't afford to replace his system equipment.
Thanks though.

Hang on...
He's admitted it's his problem - but you're acting like it's yours? IDGI.
If I read your original post, your ISP changed it's number and it's equipment. If that's so, they owe you because they're providing a faulty service! At the very least, he should be waiving your fees (or loaning you a Known Good Modem) until they fix their modem rack.

Not acting like it's our problem
Just solving it easier on our end. I've been pretty down, and John wants me to be happier, and I was just starting to be happier when this hit, and now everything is harder and longer to load so I got down again. So John would rather buy me another modem than hassle with the ISP guy.
At least it would be a quicker fix than waiting for them to upgrade sometime.

There is no concept of 56KB dialup modems on the ISP side
They have banks of modem boards at the local POP. They then get translated to either ISDN or leased line. If the ISP does not have a relationship with whoever serves your local POP, then they can't get better than 33KB.

Yes, they're still made in quantity.
Many of my clients have a half dozen external modems on their systems, some for call-in, some for call-out and some for fax out. The two brands used are US Robotics and Multi Tech. I strongly prefer the Multi Tech, they're a lot smaller and they connect with everything - except sometimes US Robotics. One of my clients recently had to change his USR fax-out modem to Multi Tech because he was getting too many fax failures.

I guess I'm just living right
I have two USR internal modems..one older Sportster 56K, and a newer V92 internal. Used both for internet and faxing before the era of the cable modem, and still use one or the other for faxing. And have never had a connection problem. (Configuration problems? Occasionally, but never a connection problem.)
Just lucky, I guess.
Of course, none of these are, or will ever be, that scourge of connectivity euphemistically referred to as the WinModem!

Nothing to do with luck
When USR inventing 56K signalling, they made a deal with the ISPs to populate the POPs with banks of their equipment. This then pushed the end users to get USR equipment. Then when the competition came around, they introduced what they claimed was compatible equipment, along with their own extensions.
But everyone was supposed to be USR compatible 1st.

New Modem -- better connection
Well, we went out today and bought an Accent 56k V.92 External Modem from Office Depot (Comp USA only had USB modems and USR modems), and now I'm connecting to my ISP at an even higher speed than before. :)
Problem all solved.

Colour me green with envy.
I've got 256k at home. That sometimes feels slow compared to the 1Mb here at work... :-/

Pretty sure that the last upgrade
took us comcast folks to 6.
Of course, now that I have the latest modem I can actually take advantage of it. The tech came in when I was having line trouble...looked at my old USR and laughed...went straight to the truck and got a new one.

Actually, 6Mb is only for real "web traffic"
not going to Giganews.
Comcast and giganews (as I understand it) have multiple Gig-E fibers tween them. I also am getting better than 10Mb speeds with my newsgroups downloading.
My fastest speed so far grabbing newsgroups stuff from Giganews is 1475 Kilo Bytes (not bits) per second, sustained.
That is right 1,475KB/sec. Running seven sessions to Giganews grabbing articles.
Let me see... that is right up there ~ 16Megabits/second (including encoding alogs). Which I thought was the maximum DOCSIS could do on the service lines.
Cool. I'll take it.

My sister does.
Anyone who is serious about the net does not. But a lot of people out there still use dialup.
A lot of my co-workers use Treos as well. That's slower than dialup.

It works for me
I'm not all that "serious" I guess, I just run mail, a few groups, and sites like this one, and that's really the main stuff.
We've had a lot of obstacles in our way to getting DSL, but we might manage to overcome them next year. Meanwhile, I'm happy with my new faster speed dial-up modem.

You're in SBC-Land...Don't hold breath!
I'm in the largest city (and the count seat) of what's purported to be the Richest county this side of the Mississippi, and I can't get DSL. (My daughter, on the other hand, who lives 5 miles outside of Bumfuck Heights in central Illinoise, had DSL pre-installed into her new houls. Go figure.) Promises of service RSN, where RSN is, at current count, > 5 years (i.e. it's been 5 years since they promised service in my area "RSN").
Puh-leeze!
Do yourself a favor, and call your cable company.
