Clearly Knoppix (which is just Debian, really, with SEKRIT OPEN SAUCE) is doing something that you're not managing to duplicate.

Look harder.

[BTW, I haven't played with Knoppix in anger for months]

New Problem with Debian
even with the Progeny installer is that i386 HW detection is nowhere near as good as Knoppix (or Kanotix, or the umpty-bazillion Knoppix-type livecds)

This means that far fewer will actually install Debian proper - and those that try to install on the HD from the livecds will have major trouble upgrading, and will get a negative view of Linux in general.
