New Any thoughts on Ubuntu Linux distro?
[link|http://www.ubuntulinux.org/|http://www.ubuntulinux.org/]

Yeah, I know, "use Debian" - but it seems to work with some of my more esoteric hardware, plus it has apt-get and full access to the Debian sources... Any gotchas, or should I keep banging away on Debian for now?

New Doomed.
It'll not get the momentum.

Better off with Progeny, I wot.

Or just keep at it with Debian. Sounds like you have issues. Do tell.

New Toshiba Satellite 1905-S303
Using the Knoppix install, it works.

Try to migrate over to the main tree, it pukes.

Try to compile my own kernel, it pukes.

Try to do just about anything other than default Knoppix, it pukes.

Try to install with the Debian installer, it pukes.

I went over this around a year ago, never got anywhere and had to keep working, so stuck Windows back on it until I had some free time. Free time might be coming soon, so I'm sticking my nose back in it again.

New You're not paying close enough attention, then :-)
Clearly Knoppix (which is just Debian, really, with SEKRIT OPEN SAUCE) is doing something that you're not managing to duplicate.

Look harder.

[BTW, I haven't played with Knoppix in anger for months]

New Problem with Debian
even with the Progeny installer is that i386 HW detection is nowhere near as good as Knoppix (or Kanotix, or the umpty-bazillion Knoppix-type livecds)

This means that far fewer will actually install Debian proper - and those that try to install on the HD from the livecds will have major trouble upgrading, and will get a negative view of Linux in general.

:-(

New Have you tried latest Debian installer (over the net)?
It is considerably better, but it only gets you to the text mode state (i.e. no X, Gnome/KDE etc.)

New Well, I did this some time ago and that's where it got me.
I'll have to download the latest version and try it again while paying attention.

New Hmmm. That machine sounds familiar...
Oh yeah. It's the one I'm typing this message on right now.

[link|http://www.mikevitale.com/1905s303.html|My installation notes from 2002] are available. I have since sent the machine back for repairs, got back a wiped-clean hard drive, and used the Debian Net installer on it as well. No problems (except those that I've caused, like spilling soda in the stupid keyboard) to report.

I've done just about everything that you've claimed to have not been able to do. Compiled Kernel. Used knoppix. Used Debian base and not-base (netinst) installer. It All Just Works.

New Yep, used those.
I get the feeling I'm missing some crucial point that needs watching, and I'll be revisiting it soon - was just looking for a "simpler" way to shoehorn myself in to Linux...

New Forget derivatives. The New Debian Installer ROCKS!
Comes in First in many places.

You all are just missing it.

It uses "Discover" and "Hotplug" exactly the same as Progeny's installer.

Enhancements from KNOPPIX have been folded in to discover. Advancements in lspci have been incorporated, udev has simplified many things. Heck you can even use kudzu if you want.

I am just flabbergasted.

You all just haven't used it.

[link|http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/|The New Debian Installer] is by far easy easy easy to use. Joey Hess and a TON of people have really worked their butts OFF! And it shows... Full-Moon effect.

New Incorrect.
The new installer didn't see my network card on my test machine, here.

Kanotix (a Knoppix knock-off) did... So they can't have folded everything in!

New Which...
Version of the Debian-Installer?

There are Nightly builds, the sarge version is slightly behind the SID version.

Did you get them from the link *I* posted?

They haven't folded in EVERYTHING mainly because some of the techniques in knoppix-kudzu (or whatever) uses some highly unorthodox conventions to kick the tires of a machine. And seeing that MOST of those conventions are for iX86 only... and can have extremely bad consequences on other platform like SPARC and HPPA etc... They are left out.

And I understand this - remember, I'm looking for something that I can just hand to any user and say "check THIS out". Following it up with - "It won't go on your hard drive without a lot of work" just won't do, though... *chuckle*

I thought I could just hand them a regular netinst CD along with the Kanotix livecd - I was disappointed when my experiment didn't work.

I'll try out your link - I think I got mine from cdimage.debian.org, not 'gluck'; I know I picked up a daily, and started out from the debian.org main page. Heh - I'm always ready to try again - wish me 'luck'!

New What kind of NIC?
There are certain kinds of NICs that have been giving hell to discover and hotplug (which are more crossplatform now)

Mayhaps a bugreport?

I have the same NIC on-board on my motherboard. Found it the first time. Dunno.

New Saw bug reports on it already via Google...
So I dunno either. Knoppix/Kanotix sees it - just none of my Debian Netinst disks... *grin* I have 4 of them at the moment.

It really is a shame that the Kanotix disk doesn't work - it's supposed to be sid just for the install issue. I hope it gets better next release - or that someone else does it better.

Geez. I may be forced to 'roll my own'.

I dunno.

Imrix?

New Or maybe not.
Did not realize that Kanotix had a newer version than the one I was using - and they specifically mention improvements in alsa after hd install...

More after the download.
