New Rumsfeld objects to pictures of POWs
...saying it "humiliates" them in violation of the Geneva accords. So those aren't prisoners we've been seeing as they variously march around or crouch with their hands behind their heads? --or is it that the Iraqui POWs are assumed to be proud to be in US custody?

Ah, the good old American double standard! Rather like the mid-1980s, when it was an act of "international barbarism" for the Sovs to shoot down a civilian airliner and an "unfortunate accident" when we did it.

In other news: after initial vigorous denials of Iraqui claims that a US aircraft went down over Baghdad, the Pentagon now acknowledges that one jet has gone missing.

cordially,

New Hey Bluke
You know where I can get my hands on some decent type 1 hebrew and arabic fonts? Preferably free (gad, but fonts can be very expensive).

Right now I have to depend on TimesNewRomanMT30 TrueType unicode for those sites, and while it suffices, I can get better results on my platform with type 1 fonts.

I haven't installed any special fonts and see Hebrew fine.
New Re: I use vanilla Mozilla 1.0 /Netscape 7.0 for Hebrew
I can see them fine too. However, I can get much nicer looking results with better fonts... and I'm not on Windows. The truetype implementation I'm using (freetype v 3.x) is pretty good, but if I want to turn any of these things into PDFs I need a type 1 font. Hence my question...

New Sorry don't know
Actually, I do very little work in Hebrew here as I work for an American company so everything is in English.

Unfortunately, Israel is very much Windows country as Windows has offered very good Hebrew support, I am not sure what you will find for non-Windows platforms

New Check my other post.
At this moment, it is in the anti-US factions' best interest to keep them alive and healthy.

Not that will necessarily happen.

But it will make GREAT propaganda to show off the LIVING captives while pointing out that the US tortures its captives to death.
New past Iraqi treatment of prisoners has been harsh
raping both the male and female prisoners appears to be a national pastime.

New Interestingly, Iraqi POW policy was reported yesterday
The Iraqi infomin (uh, information ministry) had said that all geneva conventions wrt POWs would be respected. This was on CBC, and they showed the broadcast where he was saying that, which was broadcast sometime yesterday. This morning, they have POWs. It makes me wonder how long they've actually had them for.

If you watch CNN/BBC, and then watch CBCNW, you get slightly different pictures of the war coming out. CBC's Paul Workman (who happens to be a distant cousin) is saying that UK forces are being surprised at the ferocity of resistance (he's reporting near Basra). Paul Hunter today was pointing up the fact that the media center in Qatar was still denying even the possiblity of US captures after Rumsfeld had already admitted it was a possibility this morning.

It is definitely in the Iraq regime's best interest to treat the POWs with utmost care, if they think they might be able to survive this. Part of what they must be hoping to accomplish is to show that the Bush regime has been lying to the US people, whether or not that has in fact been the case. Good treatment of US POWs (and snide comparisons to US treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay) can only help them in the court of world opinion. At least the families of the US POWs will know where they are; the same cannot be said for most of the prisoners at Guantanamo.

While the conscript army folded up in '91, it was different; this time they're defending their homes, not some other country.

The Shia in Southern Iraq are happy to see Saddam go, but I very much doubt they will rest long under US occupation. They still remember the betrayal by Bush 39 after the Gulf War. Note that when you see interviews with people in S. Iraq, they always say "yes, we are happy to see Saddam go" but never "yes, we are happy you are here". There was a documentary on CBC last night called "Generation of Hate" made last year, and which has an extensive section devoted to interviews with Shia religious leaders from S. Iraq. The US cannot expect an easy ride from these people, despite their hatred of Saddam Hussein.

New We'll see how this plays out.
Right now, they have an incentive to be very nice to those people.

In fact, they SHOULD be inviting the Red Cross and mid-east officials to check up on them.

This is propaganda.

They already know that the US will torture prisoners to death.

They already know that the US will lie about its intelligence findings.

Your link is to an Iranian page. Claim that the Iranians lied.

Show the world how nice you are.

The idea is to get the citizens in the other mid-east countries so pissed off that they'll force their governments to kick the US troops out.

It's a slim chance, but it's the only chance right now.
New I want to know how they got POW's.
If our war is going so well.

The OTHER item is that anti-US factions over there might make a HUGE display of how THESE prisoners will NOT be tortured to death......

Unlike certain mid-east prisoners in US hands.

Their pictures have been published. The world knows their faces and that they are, at this moment, alive.
New Re: I want to know how they got POW's.
...If our war is going so well.

--By capturing them, I imagine. Really, Brandioch, a dozen soldiers captured is not a particularly meaningful gauge of the success or failure of a military operation (on the other hand you have likely identified, in the participation of irregulars--"Hey! Why aren't these people cheering and throwing flowers?"--a trend that will bite us, or rather US). Weigh in again on this subject when it's a column of a few hundred Americans being marched along the road with their hands behind their heads.

cordially,
"Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist."
New Mechanic group
Headed to re-track a tank that broke down (General Blunt gave the figure that for 100 tanks traveling 100 miles, 10 tanks will break down). Apparently the mechanics' vehicle took a wrong turn and ended up facing an Iraqi tank.

It seems to me they need to secure their lines a bit more... the tank column stretches for quite a long way.

New Sorry, that was attempted sarcasm.
We were told how badly the Iraqi people hated Saddam and so forth and would surrender to US forces.

Instead of surrendering to that group for US troops, they captured them.
