Prayer Request Time
And now for number three...
My mom went to ER on Monday night for sharp abdominal pains. After a few hours it was basicly "you're constipated, here's a laxative. See your regular doctor for follow-up. Thursday afternoon, with still no movement, she went to see her doctor. Told her to get her butt to the hospital. Admitted Thursday night. Friday more attempts. I stopped for a short visit. She was in good spirits.
Saturday morning, after dropping my wife at the state fair, I stopped by for, what I thought would be, a short visit. spent the entire day. Pain was getting worse. Her kiddie doctor (hospital assigned, not her regular doctor) was there. "I've scheduled another enema and some x-rays. Don't know when radiology will get to you, sometime before 5:00 p.m. (this was t 9:00 a.m.), I'll check back with you TOMORROW." And then he left. I waited an hour, just to give the hospital a chance to work, it is a holiday weekend. Then I went to the head nurse and floor intern. They told me they would call radiology and get it done asap. Soon we had a GI doctor discussing the finding with us. Very concerned. "Apple-core" spot in the colon. Plus spots found on the liver. Might be cancer. He'll take charge, schedule a bunch of tests.
Results came back yesterday (Sunday). She does have colon cancer. No report on the liver yet. Surgery should be sometime today (Monday), if they can get her in. Again, it is a holiday weekend, so emergencies are first, then her, urgent, but not an emergency, surgery. Won't know until today.
The family is circling the wagons. One brother from Montana has flown in. Sister is on her way from Hawaii. My two daughters asked if they should come home from college. My mom's 82. On Saturday when my other brothers were not in the room, she told me "I'm ready to go..."
Prayers, thoughts, whatever welcome.

Damn, sucketh maximally.
Thoughts are with you.
I just hope she either 1) recovers well and quickly *OR* 2) goes fast.
The 3) interim crap just isn't pretty. I know, my Dad passed of Colon cancer a few years ago.
Here is hoping for 1, but if not that, 2.

Update
Surgery is scheduled to 2:30 p.m. (CDT) tomorrow (9/6). Don't know why it took so long to schedule. Mom is finally back in good spirits. Just wants to go home.

Update2 - Stage 4
Surgery went smooth. Removed a baseball sized cancerous tumor from my mom's colon. Then the surgeon went exploring...
Soft spots on the liver, assumed to be cancerous. Large mass behind/underneath the uterous (sp). Assumed cancerous. Biopsy taken and sent off. Surgeon stated that she has stage 4 cancer.
Chemo is out. Doesn't work on 81 y/o patients. Mom wouldn't want it anyhow. There are oral meds. Do nothing 1-5 years maybe longer. Take meds 1-5 years maybe longer. It will be a quality of life issue. My mom has stated that she has lived a good life, a long life, and is ready to go. She doesn't want to die, but is ready. "all my children are grown and self-sufficient." She's done her job...
She is still post-op, so the surgeon has not told her about the other cancers. When she asked me if he had gotten it all, I answered that he had gotten the entire mass from the colon. I want her to be aware when she finds out about the rest...
Sigh

You have my prayers and sympathies!
I had no idea elderly people couldn't have chemo.
I'll pray that she has a good quality of life for as long as she can and that her passing will be peaceable.
I'll also pray for you and your family while they cope with this ordeal.
