New Interesting.
But, it does not escape my notice that the Yemeni Jews lived there for 2500 years w/o being exterminated. And then somebody "poisoned the well".

New May not be so simple
I caught part of an interview with the author of a new book into the history of the creation of the Jewish State. The book details the decisions made during the period leading up to WWI by the leaders of the Zionist movement that brought an end to the Arab-Jewish cooperation in the create of a Palestine state.

Maybe becoming enemies was inevitable, but for a while, they seemed to be working to together for the same cause. The author also talked about renewed interest in the Turkish period of rule over Palestine and Jerusalem.

For the life of me I can't remember the show or the author, but I am going to search till I find it.

New That's not what I said nor what the author was saying
What I am saying is that to claim everything happens to the Jews first, that all they are doing is reacting as your previous post implies, is too simplistic an explanation.

New here is a somewhat fair timeline

as you can see lots of jewish/arab anger, interestingly enough the nomadic tribes, beduin and druze sided with the jews against what they called city folk and assisted in helping Israel take and guard its borders. The zionist were communists as bad as moffit. The bought land communally from turkish owners, the local sharecroppers were evicted and kibbutz were started up. This was in the late 1800's.

Local Jews who lived there for 6 thousand years or so were rather bemused by all the industry and communism and went back to davening.

The sharecroppers like the blacks in our own south moved to the city and depressed labor prices which made it ripe for a revolt against the colonialists and arab owners. Jews were included in the bloodletting because just like here, any self respecting riot that doesnt involve killing unwanted minorities is just a party gone bad.

Hitler had his turn in europe and the city arabs were all for that fun. They actually had an arab legion in stalingrad.

After the camps were found and the world grew shocked, barely enough but enough to vote for partition and Israel declared their half of the partition a state. Jordan and Egypt were anxious to turn israel into 1939 poland and attacked. Lebanon and Syria wernt about to let Nasser and Hussein get the good stuff so they declared war as well.Israel held them off and kept a route to west jerusalem open.

In 1974 it was apparent that the non Israeli occupants of the partitioned area were hated by every other ethnic group world wide. Although they are Arab decent they were villified, robbed killed by all of their host countries. Used as proxies in the cold war and basically fucked, they needed their own state on their side of the partition.

Now a lot of people howl about Israeli terrorism, Israelis howl about arab terrorism but the only way out for both sides is self recognition, Capitols in Jerusalem and getting the sides to work together. Having met both Israelis and Palestinians they are both smart, cosmopolitan and extremely industrious. If hamas spent half the energy smuggling guns into producing cleanroom chips both AMD and Intel would be based there. If the Israelis spent less energy into trying to get the last dumpling on the table their silicon valley would outshine ours from the 90's

It wont happen because the surrounding states need the conflict to continue to self justify their own existence. If the Pals and the Israelis ever got together they could ressurect the old assyrian kingdom, nothing could stop them except themselves.

Problem is the same one arafat faced at camp david. Whatever Palestinian signed an agreement his life expectancy is zero. Like Michael Collins they would be sacrificed immediately. It will take a big man to take that step.

I also find it interesting that people who take extreme sides one of the other have never actually met real live israelis or real live palestinians, go figure

New Wow.
Not that I'm big-noting myself or anything, but careful if casual readings of the ME conflict over the years has generally led me to much the same conclusions. I must have been brainwashed by the same guys as that author. :-)

Interesting that the best solution is to combine the Isrealis and the Palestininans. Two things in the way of that: 1. the Isrealis need to breed faster, 2. those on each side (those it's the Palestinians usually decried) indoctrinating hatred for the other side need A Good Stern Talking To.

New here is a link to a 1907 report from zionist eyewitness
[link|http://www.zionismontheweb.org/Rupin1907.htm|http://www.zionismon...org/Rupin1907.htm] remember this is long before any hopes of a state
also the typical euro eyeing his backward cousins like any good colonialist.
In Jerusalem conditions differ from those which obtain in the three above-mentioned cities: the reasons being that, in addition to the original Sephardic and the later 'Halukkah Ashkenazic populations, we find a considerable element, of recent growth, which earns its living by work; it is composed partly of Jews from Persia, Yemen, Bokhara and Morocco, and partly of young Jews of the modern type from Eastern Europe, who have come to Palestine under the influence of the Zionist idea. It is an exceedingly motley mixture of Jews from all the countries under the sun which makes up the Jewish population of Jerusalem. There are many interesting observations to be made on the diverse modes of life adopted by these Jewish settlers. The Bokharian Jew is generally well to do or even rich, and it is a matter of pride with him to have a handsome and roomy house in Jerusalem. The East-European Jew builds himself a small, wretched dwelling. Even more primitive is the e mode of life of the Yemenite Jew, who is happy to have any sort of home. Nevertheless these immigrants from Yemen are a valuable element for Palestine, for they are able, by virtue of the fewness of their needs, to compete successfully with the cheap labor of the Arabs. Apart from this, they are so accustomed to heavy physical labor that they can easily be transformed into agricultural workers, and from all appearances they will play a considerable role in this field.

In Jerusalem, again, have been concentrated the most important educational and hygienic institutes, There are the big hospitals, schools, orphan homes, the Bezalel Arts and Crafts School, the National Library, etc. Jewish influence in Jerusalem is, however, considerably smaller than might be expected for the fact that the Jews make up sixty to seventy per cent of the population. The reason for this apparent anomaly is that political influence is a consequence of economic power, and the Jews of Jerusalem lack economic power. It is still the 'Halukkah which is the main support of the community. An increasing number of Jews may, indeed, be found turning to labor and trade; but this phenomenon is more or less of an experiment, which we hope will be successful and will grow in t he future. The fact that the Jews of Jerusalem are a majority finds expression in the Hebrew and Yiddish signs which cover the shops nearly everywhere. The post offices of the foreign governments have Hebrew notices, while the Turkish post office in the Jewish quarter even has a Hebrew rubber-stamp. A large mill has recently been acquired by Jews.

New I have in mind the Deir Yassin massacre.
From my view it's intent was to use it in the ethnic cleansing of Arabs. From someone who grew up in A Zionist home, we have [link|http://www.ariga.com/peacewatch/dy/dycg.htm|this]:
The evidence that the Irgun and Lehi perpetrated a massacre at Deir Yassin is overwhelming. It comes from numerous independent sources, Jewish and Arab, Haganah and dissidents and it is recorded on film. It does not depend on the testimony of any one person. There are a number of objections and excuses that have been raised by revisionist sources. None of them would be justification for a massacre, but most of them are untrue in any event. The attack was unprovoked. The motivation for it was supposedly booty and revenge for misdeeds of the village ten years previously. It was not part of any Haganah plan, and was allowed only reluctantly by the Haganah, after the revisionists refused several other options. There were only a few, if any, foreign Arab soldiers in the village. There were possibly a few cases in which Arab men had disguised themselves as women, but these do not explain the shooting of little children. Most casualties, as attested by several independent witnesses, were shot and did not die when houses were blown up. The number of casualties cannot be determined exactly. The most conservative estimate is 107 dead,62 but there were probably more.

The attempt by Revisionist sympathizers to implicate the Haganah in this act does not help the Zionist cause in any way imaginable, nor does it detract from the guilt of the Revisionists. Haganah commander Shaltiel was guilty to the extent that he allowed an attack on a peaceful village, and other individuals provided aid, both with and without the approval of Shaltiel. There is no evidence that Haganah command outside Jerusalem had known of the attack, nor did David Shaltiel imagine there would be a massacre. However, it is undeniable that the Haganah and the State of Israel attempted to minimize and cover up the massacre, apart from isolated verbal attacks on the Revisionists. The people who perpetrated the massacre were never brought to justice. No compensation was offered to victims. Meir Pail\ufffds report, and the accompanying photos, have not been released even though it is more than fifty years after the event.

The attempt by Revisionists and their sympathizers to deny that there was a massacre, or to obscure the facts with all kinds of side issues is shameful and absurd. It is the act of criminals who are still at large, and have not come to grips with their guilt.
Here's a Jewish [link|http://www.iht.com/articles/1998/04/09/edmarc.t.php|opinion piece] in the International Herald Tribune on the 50th anniversary of the massacre.
Forty years ago, Buber concluded his reflections on Deir Yassin with these words: "The time will come when it will be possible to conceive of some act in Deir Yassin, an act which will symbolize our people's desire for justice and brotherhood with the Arab people."

New from a survivor
[link|http://hebron1929.info/Hebronletter.html|http://hebron1929.info/Hebronletter.html]
n the meantime, mounted policemen arrived, and all became still outside. We thought that our salvation had come. All through the night the police patrolled the streets. But it seemed that they were having problems. You can understand that I walked the floor all the night terribly worried, with my heart in my mouth. On Shabbes morning, we saw that the situation was getting worse. Cars kept racing back and forth through the streets. They were filled with Arabs armed with long iron bars, long knives, and axes. The Arabs kept screaming that they were going to Jerusalem to slaughter all the Jews. Soon many Jews gathered in our house. We held a meeting and talked over the situation, but couldn't think of anything we could do to protect ourselves, since none of us had any weapons. Many of the people remained in our house, because by then it was too dangerous to try to go home.

New Re: from a survivor
It's hard to accept as unbiased someone who says "As of today, there are 63 holy martyrs." I'm not saying there's no truth there. But, the perception of this person are just too foreign.

Finally, and I've said this many times before, two wrongs do not make a right!

New remember when and by whom the letter was written
In 1907, the peak year of Jewish immigration into the United States, my maternal grandfather, Aharon Reuven Bernzweig, his wife Breine Zuch Bernzweig, and their six children left Stanislaw, Galicia (then Austrian Poland), and settled in New York City. Twenty years later, in 1927, after their children were grown and they had accumulated a modest capital, they were in a position to fulfill the dream of many traditional Jews‑‑to spend their retirement years in Eretz Hakodesh, the Holy Land.
galicia to nyc then hebron? religious jews, very foreign. Yes 2 wrongs dont make a right, war time doesnt excuse that kind of behavior.
