Couldn't resist puting something up . . .
. . so I took time out to write up a little article for my old AAxNet Web site - [link|http://www.aaxnet.com/editor/edit042.html|Windows Vista - Broken by Design].

Edits and notes, in order that they appear:
"...Many of the much-trumpeted features..."
Office 2003 will install and run on Vista.
MSDE isn't supported on Vista, but I'm not convinced that that is is the same as "won't work". Of course "isn't supported" is Microsoft-ese for "won't get the security update to stop you getting humped by the next iteration of Slammer".
If Vista looks like a Macintosh, then I have an uncanny resemblance to Brad Pitt.
"...doing some image work, lets say, and..."
"Lets Say Microsoft finds there's a flaw in a popular video card, which might allow breaking DRM protections."
"...to help complexicatecomplicate the situation."
"But it gets worse: [note colon, not full stop] a Vista computer..."
You know what's really stupid? Most of the "premium content" that all this shit is designed to safeguard is unutterable shit that's not even fit for wiping the arse of you and I.
(That last bit isn't necessarily an editorial comment, but it's a good point)

Good suggestions, and I've made adjustments.
I did, however, find some fairly solid evidence MSDE actually doesn't run on Vista. Particularly a software company's instructions on how to get their software to work once you find out MSDE doesn't work. You have to disable Account Control and then uninstall MSDE for starters.

Well, Peter claims to be from . . .
. . an earlier population established before the various krautish tibes landed in England, so an appropriate CRC designation might be "ignorant aboriginal baboon".

One disagreement
I suspect this whole situation is going to trigger some severe antitrust action against Microsoft - first in Europe, then in Asia, and finally in the U.S. I don't think any Asian countries ... oh who are we kidding, it's China ... will bother bringing legal action. They'll just crack everything themselves and tell Microsoft to go fuck themselves when they complain. Who do you think is going to be making nearly all the hardware by the end of the decade?

You're forgetting Japan . . .
. . they've already been in a couple minor dustups with Microsoft. There's also Korea and Taiwan. Korea was in a tiff with Microsoft just a couple months ago.

All they can do is say "no"
China can make their own and sell the shit out of it.

Actually the DoJ has been quite active in anti-trust
perhaps surprisingly so - see DRAM (executives going to jail and big fines), and pending investigations into SRAM and IIRC, music CD's and more. I suspect that a lot of the DoJ policies are consistent between administrations and influenced by career government employees.
OTOH, to put it mildly, they could (and should) have been much better vs MS, but I'm not sure that would change with a change of party - there are plenty of Democrats in Seattle, and Hollywood is a big donor to them too. (Remember that the "everything must have DRM" bill was proposed by then Senator Fritz Hollings, a Democrat).
Not trying to start a political war, but just being realistic about politics.

Yeah, but I couldn't resist a swipe . . .
. . at how the Republicans let Microsoft of the hook after they were thoroughly convicted and that conviction was upheld in appeal. Basically they just asked Microsoft what they would be happy with and signed off on it.
Microsoft executives admitted they had more power over computer makers after the settlement than they did before.
Judge CKK is a bit pissed that they haven't even complied with those terms.
