Welcome to IWETHEY!

New So I'm going to pay a toll to drive to the grocery store?
What about surface roads?
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New That first paragraph I was playing devil's advocate
I agree that roads are one of the things that can't be reasonably accommodated in a strictly libertarian way. There are already housing developments -- my sister-in-law used to live in one -- that do their own road maintenance within the development. Homeowners' Association fees cover plowing and patching. If you live there, you pay it. It ends up looking a whole lot like a tax.

But the second paragraph I was completely serious. Highway costs should be entirely covered by gas taxes. People should be directly exposed to the true cost of driving.[1] This should include construction, maintenance, enforcement, evironmental impact, everything. Railroads won't be saved by subsidising them, but by de-subsidising roads.

[1] Yes, I think this should also include the cost of maintaining "stability"[2] in the Middle East. But people will argue that point.

[2] Chyeah, right.

New 'Easypass' for everything. At every intersection
and driveway. Has the 'beneficial' side effect of allowing the cops to give you speeding tickets without effort, and allows the Dept. of Homeland Security to monitor the movements of citizens terrorists. Since this is the US, economic libertarianism will trump social libertarianism every time.

Aint technology grand?

Imric's Tips for Living
  • Paranoia Is a Survival Trait
  • Pessimists are never disappointed - but sometimes, if they are very lucky, they can be pleasantly surprised...
  • Even though everyone is out to get you, it doesn't matter unless you let them win.

Nothing is as simple as it seems in the beginning,
As hopeless as it seems in the middle,
Or as finished as it seems in the end.

New Screw you
I was just starting to get un-crabby today and you go and piss in my Wheaties with an all-too-plausible future. Now I need a drink.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. (Herm Albright)
New Can I make it a donut instead?
Oh man, glazed chocolate, glass of milk and a nap. [siiiiiiigh]
