I think the issue with the first was the ambient noise. The others didn't have that and I heard them clearly.

I can still hear older televisions from a floor away (even with the volume down)...its actually about the same..damned annoying. Its one of the reasons I don't watch much TV...as a kid the old sets used to drive me crazy after a while.
