New That is an irritating sound.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- Mark Renton, Trainspotting.
New Hmmm
I'm 32, and I heard that damn thing just fine. Fucking annoying, 'tis.

New All I heard was the kids in the background.
Oh well, too many concerts...
New I can hear it fine, and I'm 37.
Although interestingly I had to turn off the noise-cancelling on my headphones first.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New You are in the cross-over age.
I heard an interview with the guy who created
it the REAL one and his daughter. He knew there
was no way for anyone to record it, and as people
pointed out here already, cell phones are incapable
of producing it.

BUT: It did lead to the idea of people using
a PC based sound generator to create the highest
possible frequency that the phones could generate.

It turns out that about 1/2 the teachers in the
school could not hear it, and it seemed to be
a sure thing after age 40.
New There are many versions of the file out there.
Some I hear easily, some I have to crank up the volume to hear.

E.g. [link|http://www.wikiupload.com/file_store/upload_1/5970476574478882200090.mp3|This one] I hear fine.

[link|http://graphics.nytimes.com/packages/audio/nyregion/20060610_RINGTONE.mp3|This one] I have to turn up the volume to hear easily.

YMMV.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who hears lots of clicking when playing them on his PC, but doesn't hear clicking when they're played on a Mac.)
New I hear those...but not the reg recording.

New I could hear all of them
which is just whacked, as I spent a lot of years playing in loud rock bands.

Guess my hearing is not as farked by that as I was afraid it would be.

New Mine's pretty good, given the amount of headphone use
I think the issue with the first was the ambient noise. The others didn't have that and I heard them clearly.

I can still hear older televisions from a floor away (even with the volume down)...its actually about the same..damned annoying. Its one of the reasons I don't watch much TV...as a kid the old sets used to drive me crazy after a while.
