New Georgia lawmakers OK public school Bible classes
[link|http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12055286/|http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12055286/]

ATLANTA - Georgia lawmakers have approved a measure to fund elective Bible courses in public schools, raising concern among civil liberties groups the classes could violate the U.S. constitutional separation of church and state. Under the bill, which now goes to Gov. Sonny Perdue for his signature, the State Board of Education would have to adopt curricula for two classes on the history and literature of the Old and New Testaments. School districts would then have the option of offering the courses.
...
The elective courses, according to the bill, are to "be taught in an objective and nondevotional manner with no attempt made to indoctrinate students," and should "not disparage or encourage a commitment to a set of religious beliefs."

Oh, for ****'s sake. Objective and nondevotional without comparing other religious beliefs. Yeah, I believe that too. Do Senators not understand that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion?
Matthew Greet

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

New Ending quote got to me.
"We're obviously going to have folks that challenge the issue, but if we do nothing because of fear of a lawsuit, then school boards and superintendents can live in that fear and kids never learn what they might need to know," Williams said.

?

Depending on how it's done, it might be harmless. But it's probably just the sharp end of the wedge.

I'd feel much better about legislators concerns about what kids are learning if they introduced legislation on classes on what they need to know - like say, the Constitution - rather than what they might need to know.

I note that the chief sponsor was a Republican (ref. original article)
and that Georgia has a majority of Republican in both their House and Senate.

The proposal, originally introduced this year by a group of Senate Democrats, surprised many Republicans, who hold majorities in both the Georgia House and Senate. Republicans quickly substituted their own version, which specifies that the Bible itself would be the course textbook.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. New Theoretically could be OK. Won't be.
Religion is as valid an area of study as any other. Certainly in universities there are people who analyze religious texts without necessarily pushing any point of view about them. (And these people wind up offending the fundamentalists with what they find, but that's life.)

However nobody with a brain thinks that these elective classes will look be that. So I dislike them. And don't think that public tax money should be spent on the purpose of pushing the particular religious view that you know will be presented.

Cheers,
Ben

Why not the Book of Mormon or the Qur'an as well, while they're at it? The teachings of Buddha, anyone? Paganism? Satanism? Scientology?

I mean, if we're going to have a religious history course, why limit yourself to just two of the more popular ones?
