Compatibility and our updated CSS behavior

Obviously, we have heard the feedback asking us to be more standards-compliant in our rendering behavior. We must balance this ask with the need of our customers (and end users) to have their pages not be broken. To find a balance we introduced a strict mode in IE6 that lets authors opt in into the more standards compliant rendering (and, if youre putting in a modern DOCTYPE declaration, youre being opted in automatically). Pages authored under non-strict mode (or quirks mode) will not change behavior in IE7 so the fixes weve done to be more CSS compliant wont appear under quirks mode. However, if your content is under strict mode, our behavior is more standards compliant, and your pages may break - for example, if you use some of the CSS hacks or rely on our old incorrect overflow behavior. We understand the pain this might cause in the short term but we believe a move to a more standard compliant implementation benefits everyone in the long run.
--------
IOW, if your page doesn't validate to strict mode (and my employer's doesn't and probably won't in my lifetime) you'll get IE 6 behavior. Furthermore, many sites, including ours, intentionally introduce errors to force quirks mode because they have a different default style sheet for strict mode that looks "wrong" to many users.

Someone isn't thinking.

New What they should be doing
IE 6 defaults to what is now called "quirks mode". You can add a doctype to specify "strict mode".

IE 7 should default to strict, allowing a doctype to specify quirks.

This way, anyone who is intentionally writing to IE 6 quirks mode can use a doctype to specify this. Anyone trying to write to current standards will be automatically supported.

From your snip, it looks like thie may be what they're saying. Now if your site is intentionally writing to the IE 6 quirks mode, what exactly would you have MS do in IE 7 to make your site work the way you'd like? I'm no fan of MS, but I don't see how else they could deal with this.

New Its a Beta
And hence its reasonable for things to look broken.

This is the time for site owners to adapt. If they keep this strategy, most people will never ever see the benefits of the fixes.

Also, even quirks mode stuff will benefit from the CSS fixes (which is most of what there are). Much of it is adding support for CSS that IE 6 doesn't implement or implements wrong (and so isn't used).

New Perhaps they'll fix the parser as well?
Ran across this one today. IE has its own idea of what constitutes a well formed html document wrt script tags.

[link|http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/cus/test/iegood.html|Display Hello]

[link|http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/cus/test/iebad.html|Display Nothing]

Only difference betwixt the two is:

New Working as intended?
From [link|http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#C_3|http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#C_3] :

C.3. Element Minimization and Empty Element Content
Given an empty instance of an element whose content model is not EMPTY (for example, an empty title or paragraph) do not use the minimized form (e.g. use

and not
).

From [link|http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/dtds.html#a_dtd_XHTML-1.0-Transitional|http://www.w3.org/TR...-1.0-Transitional] :

New Sounds semi-reasonable
I notice that doing that with a font tag:

leaves a dangling reference in both IE and FireFox (that is, all subsequent text will be in blue. I'm assuming that IE considers that the script tag is unclosed and the remaining text is considered to be script.

Of course, that leaves two questions. First, if it considered the text that follows to be part of the opened script tag, why then did it not emit javascript error warnings? And why do the various validators (Todd's included) not issue a warning about the non-well formedness?

Oh well, at least you've clued me in on the source of the behavior. :-)
New I'll look into generating a better error
as soon as my world stops spinning.

New It's shite.
The UI is horrible. It's like a mutated version of a fucked-up Firefox. I can't move the toolbars around, and apparently having no menus is some kind of "feature". (You can turn them back on - there's a "please partially un-retard my browser" option)

It's uglier than Mike after a good *shun*ing, too.
