I think I already went through that year.
No details here, but if I meet you in person, I'll tell you.

Chicago to Minnesota is a 5 hour drive
I made it for many years on my way through International Falls on fishing trips into Quetico Park in Ontario.
lincoln
"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

400 miles in 5 hours.
Avg 80 mph... with no gas stops, bio stops, WHP stops...
Takes us 6 hours.

She's handicapped and cannot stand long drives.
ANd before someone says, "well have her sit"... I'll add, nor sit for a prolonged time either.

Silly question:
Where is it being held this year? I know, probably the same place as every year, but just want to go hunting around for cheapest travel options... That possibly includes flying in to some podunk place along somebody's travel route and hitching up with them.

Dood, there's nothing *but* podunk on that travel route
Unless you start from Chicago, the only borderline-non-podunk places are Detroit -- which you do not want to fly into -- Toledo, Cleveland and Pittsburg.

Better to fly into Flint than Detroit
Cheaper and a nicer location, but you'd probably end up going through Detroit anyways.
Detroit isn't that bad. The airport is in Romulus, not Detroit. The only pain is the long security wait. Flint is much faster.

If you're trying for cheap...
you might price out flying in to NYC then taking bus or train to Philly.
It probably would be cheaper to fly directly though. And you'd save more with less stress by taking a redeye.
