Today is just going swimmingly.
Seriously! No sign needed here.
1. Got a new place, two miles away from work. I'll be bicycling to work, saving money, etc... New roommate is cool, spent 7 years backpacking around Africa, and is a PhD in some biotech field...
2. My dad bought me a computer for Christmas. The computer couldn't hold a candle to my custom rig, so I was going to return it and get some slightly different toys, but two of the boxes apparently dissapeared between the time they were delivered and the time I got there. Turns out they got delivered to the shed behind my brother's place; so time for them to go back!
3. A "friend" (who's continued lifespan if tonight doesn't go well will be measured in picoseconds) set me up for a blind date tonight that I'm not supposed to know anything about at all, and I get the feeling that the other person might not know either. Well, I know, and I'm going armed for bear. (Or should that be beaver? I'm going straight to Hell now...) New haircut, got a good shave, nice clean pair of pants, etc. I'm actually in a good place re: this - if nothing else, we can have a good laugh about it, and if something happens, great!

You ever watch Grace Under Fire?
Her first attempted date after her divorce was with a guy who had also just gotten divorced. The evening turned into a game of "My ex is worse than yours." And they both laughed their asses off about it. Sounds like you're going in with a healthy attitude. Good luck.

Chicago to Minnesota is a 5 hour drive
I made it for many years on my way through International Falls on fishing trips into Quetico Park in Ontario.
lincoln
"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

Silly question:
Where is it being held this year? I know, probably the same place as every year, but just want to go hunting around for cheapest travel options... That possibly includes flying in to some podunk place along somebody's travel route and hitching up with them.

Dood, there's nothing *but* podunk on that travel route
Unless you start from Chicago, the only borderline-non-podunk places are Detroit -- which you do not want to fly into -- Toledo, Cleveland and Pittsburg.

Better to fly into Flint than Detroit
Cheaper and a nicer location, but you'd probably end up going through Detroit anyways.
Detroit isn't that bad. The airport is in Romulus, not Detroit. The only pain is the long security wait. Flint is much faster.

If you're trying for cheap...
you might price out flying in to NYC then taking bus or train to Philly.
It probably would be cheaper to fly directly though. And you'd save more with less stress by taking a redeye.

To hell with slow.
My most rewarding and memorable relationships hve all hit the sack on the first or second date. My extended courtships have been uniformly disappointing.
Women all say they want a slow and extended courtship, but if you try it don't expect any respect. Sure there's exceptions, but the rule rules.

As a long time enthusiast of Quantum Physics . . .
. . I hold that a behavior does not exist until it is observed**. Having wasted an incredible amount of time and effort over my liefetime trying to observe various women responding to courtship I've concluded that behavior just may not exist in real life.
In any case, I'm an older guy now and don't have time for that sort of nonsense any more. If that means I have to go back to toothbrush management, well, that's what I'll do. At least that was fun.
** Of course I understand that observing it will change it, but to change it you first have to observe it.

I went out for ice cream on my first date after the divorce
His name was Frank. Met him on eharmony. He was okay. I wasnt attracted to him. But I was joyful driving home after the date because I had done it. I had gone on my first date in 15 years and it went just fine. It was a major rite of passage for me. We didnt go out again. But I didnt care. I will always fondly remember good old Frank.
