Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Rita now a Cat 4.
New You don't know the half of it!
Once she starts spinning out of control...it can get ugly!

Imric's Tips for Living
  • Paranoia Is a Survival Trait
  • Pessimists are never disappointed - but sometimes, if they are very lucky, they can be pleasantly surprised...
  • Even though everyone is out to get you, it doesn't matter unless you let them win.

Nothing is as simple as it seems in the beginning,
As hopeless as it seems in the middle,
Or as finished as it seems in the end.

New Oh, you di'n't just say "tee-hee"

New You know she would agree.
And then she would deck me.

New A good history of Galveston floods, plus pix
As Rita heads toward Texas,

"In recovering from this cataclysm, Galveston transformed itself through political and technological changes. It pioneered the commission form of local government in 1901, undertook the construction of the initial portion of the Seawall (1902-04), raised the city's grade (1904-10), and opened the new causeway (1912). These improvements meant that Galveston was much better prepared to cope with an even more severe hurricane in August 1915."

...raised the city's grade...10 feet!

Lots of great photos of the seawall and other things.
New Just on NPR, too -
A recap from a historian (maybe with some direct connection with survivors too; missed intro) Clara Barton was there with 8 people initially; she was so universally respected that people all over began sending $$ to her.

(Dunno if this was the first significant Red Cross founding/funding activity or not?)
She managed to get local middle-class white women on the oversight boards (for the first time) - by pointing out that they'd always been doing this sort of work in any emergency, anyway.

Fingers crossed for those poor bastards - gather that Max Elevation on the island is +9 feet!
