New Er, no. That wasn't the argument.
The argument was "all Java desktop apps suck". To which a list was provided.

The Peter asked for a list of Smalltalk apps that don't suck. To which a list was provided. Now, if you want to provide a list, you'd better expect you're going to be asked to back up the "don't suck" part.

And you're not "done" until you address the % of Java developers working on back-end vs. front-end (non-web). If 1/100 (or whatever) Java developers are actually working on a front-end application (I'd be surprised), then you can start a comparison.

So don't spout, then run crying when someone calls "bullshit". That's childish.

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Whose argument was that?
Rarely have I ever used a Java application that worked properly.
[link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=219405|http://z.iwethey.org...?contentid=219405]

Rarely have I ever used... != I have never used... HTH.

My daughters both use (and I have on occasion) LimeWire and I've never had a problem with it. It loads reasonably quickly, has a nice intuitive interface, etc. For what it does, it's quite good. I know I apologized to you before, but ferchrissakes Scott, think about this for a second: You take my above sentence and imply that it is equivalent to, "All java desktop apps suck." Understand now why one might get the impression that there is at least some hypersensitivity around here concerning Java?

Me, I'm bailing before I start getting called all sorts of names again ;0)

jb4 asked for counterexamples against "all Java applications are crap", and that's when Peter started his list. Whether or not that's what you said, that's the list Peter was presenting. :-)

New Things were childish long before this
If we want to address non-desktop apps, then Smalltalk still wins as more productive - ie more useful code per developer working. Most Smalltalk apps are enterprise - client server deals. No Smalltalk is not good for shrinkwrap - neither is Java. I would say that the quality of what you get with Smalltalk, allowing for non-native GUI variation, is much higher per unit of effort than you get with Java.

I have a little firsthand knowledge of the general suckiness of Java for desktop apps, unlike the rest of you whiners, I've actually written one.

[link|http://homepage.mac.com/tblanchard|http://homepage.mac.com/tblanchard] - the JEOModeler app is written using Swing, it models schemas for use with WebObjects. I put quite a lot of work into it and, while it works well enough to do the job, for the level of effort expended, it sucks.

So I'd say I know a little bit about what I'm talking about WRT Java desktop app development sucking.

But none of this has anything to do with anything.

Exit, stage up.

New Who said a damn thing about development?
If programming Java applications meant that you had to stick pins in your face and hit yourself in the gonads with a hammer once an hour on the hour, it wouldn't alter the fact that there are good, nay excellent desktop applications written in Java.

The fact that programming SmallTalk is, apparently, akin to being gently fellated by angels doesn't alter the fact that you couldn't come up with a single non-arse desktop application.

Change the subject and then fuck off? You're turning into a politician. Or a manager.

New Hey Peter
Fuck you. We were talking about Java. I granted you 2 apps that don't suck. I don't really need to defend Smalltalk, its made its mark and it remains the primary fount of innovation in the industry.

Given that Smalltalk isn't build to do native desktop apps, you might as well ask for fucking SQL desktop apps and proclaim it a load o shit as well.

Apparently your fucking google finger is broken. Pity thats all.

[link|http://www.whysmalltalk.com/production/index.htm|http://www.whysmallt...duction/index.htm]

'course, "apps" is rather a quaint concept when you think of it - precious few bits of smalltalk are bundled into "apps", they're just fucking objects that get added to the environment. Ripping them out into "apps" isn't exactly natural.

However, if you'd like to see a few "projects" [link|http://www.squeaksource.com|http://www.squeaksource.com] is the squeak project repository. Some are "apps" (email clients, jabber client, modeling tools) others are just libs. There's not a huge difference in Smalltalk.

[link|http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/publicRepository/|http://www.cincomsma...publicRepository/] is for the visualworks platform.

You might also google 'jwars', its the fucking planning tool running the US military these days, its also written in Smalltalk but if you download it we'll have to fucking kill you. [link|http://www.caci.com/business/systems/simulation/jwars.shtml|http://www.caci.com/...ation/jwars.shtml]

Big Server Software, Inc.
cshankey@bigserver.com
Big Server Software, Inc. Big Server Software has been developing enterprise-capable software using Internet technologies since 1990. Our core product is an E-Business Operating System called Visual Knowledge. Our mission is to develop, license and support Visual Knowledge applications for our partners in strategic markets, and to build global awareness and competence in developing applications with Visual Knowledge. Visual Knowledge Is an enabling environment for E-Business: it seamlessly integrates application development and E-Business operations Is a highly advanced but mature E-commerce platform that has had more than $13M invested over nine years in its creation and commercialization. Provides a real-time virtual representation of a business or of many businesses. Is a software Lego kit that lets ordinary people build complex applications without programming. Integrates and simplifies all computer concepts such as database, transactions, distributed computing and application development. Fully supports B2B and B2C E-Commerce, Enterprise Information Management and Business Process driven software development. Works with Windows, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX (and soon, Macintosh) History Big Servers first major contract was with BC Hydro from 1990 to 1996. This $10M contract mandated Big Server to develop an enterprise level system to manage $17B in assets, personnel, cost accounting and system operations located in 1100 different facilities. The system was implemented to operate over one of the largest Intranets of its time and gave Big Server a multi-year edge in understanding how to build major information systems for the Internet. This project formed the basis of the Visual Knowledge technology owned by Big Server. Partners In 1998 Big Server licensed Visual Knowledge and developed a highly integrated line of products for the business aviation market. MACH-1 Software Corporation was Big Servers first value-added reseller of Visual Knowledge. MACH-1 has successfully marketed their products into the largest charter airlines in the US. MACH-1 integrates Trip planning, crew and aircraft dispatching, customer quotation and billing, cost accounting and several other critical features that help an airline or corporate flight department profitable, legal and efficient. In 1999 Big Server licensed Visual Knowledge and started development of e-commerce based global trading system. This E-business exchange will permit manufacturers from around the world to auction container loads of goods to major buyers. Major program partners, including some of the largest banks in the world, are connected into this system so that Trade Financing, Insurance, Logistics, Freight and all other components required to get goods from supplier to buyer are automated.

EDOR
darin@edor.it
Since 1985, EDOR has developed turn-key smalltalk applications for many industries, with the greatest concentration in the banking and finance arena. Recently EDOR released a new version of its company management product MIDA, written 100% in smalltalk. This replaces the previous version, installed in over 4,000 Italian companies, which was written in COBOL. The new smalltalk version was developed according to the concept of an "object factory", assembling components, or objects, into a finished software application. The project was partially financed by the Italian Ministry of Scientific Research. EDOR is very interested in collaborating with non-Italian companies with the objective of exchanging objects/components and engaging in joint marketing/sales.

The Discovery Manager software follows the scientific flow of the organization from clinical data and genetic map to physical map, sequence, structure, and function. The modern design of the system addresses the complex organizational and data issues created by the collaborative nature of genome investigations. Central to the power of the software is the rich computer representation and semantics of biological objects and scientific processes. Its framework allows the researcher to seamlessly move data from one step to the next and from one organization to another, across multiple computer platforms. A unified user interface provides access to both proprietary and public domain data analysis tools and algorithms. Information flows across both internet and intranet to facilitate worldwide communication. Genomica software thus allows the scientist to drive the gene discovery and functional analysis process rapidly, efficiently and effectively. It provides a more focused approach to uncovering gene candidates, and turning gene candidates into targets for drug discovery.

From the late 80's to November 1993, more than a hundred people were coding smalltalk in ObjectWorks 4.1 for a variety of internal applications. Then, all of a sudden, in a speech addressed to the 1100 IT professionals o the firm, the C++ programming language was chosed to be the *official* language to be used everywhere, and where the specialized feaures of a specific other programming language were not essential. However, some ObjectWorks (and now VisualWorks) apps are still in production and once in a while someone is asked to tweak it to patch in some new features. Isolated, unknown to most people, and mysterious, they do however still get the job done. They are *Legacy* smalltalk applications.
