New Informal poll
[link|http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/07/13/choking.game.ap/index.html|The Choking Game]

Though the so-called game is new to many adults, it's likely something that children have been doing for a long time, said Connecticut-based child psychologist Dr. Lawrence Shapiro, author of "The Secret Language of Children: How to Understand What Your Kids are Really Saying."

Ok. I didn't lead >that< sheltered of an existence. I, until reading this, had never heard of this game. What about you?

New Never.
Well, let me revise that. Not as a kid's game. And not to get 'high'.

New I've heard of it.
Both in the context of getting "high" and autoerotic asphysxiation.
The "high" is a tingly, floating experience. It's a free way to get high, it's relatively easy to do, and kids arent always capable of understanding the risks.

During sex, it's supposed to give awesome orgasms. The ultimate pursuit of pleasure, I guess.

I've seen a few patients on psych wards as a result of this.

New I've just heard of the latter. But not among 10 year olds. :(

It would seem, therefore, that the three human impulses embodied in religion are fear, conceit, and hatred. The purpose of religion, one might say, is to give an air of respectibility to these passions. -- Bertrand Russell
New Never heard of it.

New yes, cross your hands in front of your chest
let all the air out of your lungs, a compatriot bearhugs so you cant suck in air, you pass out. Take turns, it was a way to amuse ourselves at the age of 13-15. Tried it a couple of times later in the ring so you would know as a holder when to let your opponant go before damage sets in.

Dont think sex would be enhanced by it. To me that takes all my concentration, no distractions.

New You were a wrassler too?!? Sheesh man.
You need to write this stuff down in a memoir. Have it published after your demise if necessary.

Get crackin!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Same here.
Midwest method of getting a buzz. Identical to what you described. Pretty much the same age range too.

Was a short rage back in the middle '60s.

shrub\ufffdbish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New Only from the previous article a few weeks ago.
The other new one to me: gangs of kids inhaling freon from building ACs. The orthodontist told me his office AC went out one day -- all of the freon was gone, and a neighbor reported seeing kids on the roof. This happened several times and the police finally advised him to put a lock box on the controls. Apparently this is a big problem in the area, and businesses with ACs on the ground floor now install lock boxes as a matter of course.

New Not a "game" per se
But I remember someone saying he learned how to make someone pass out. Pretty similar to the "arms crossed and exhale" someone else (Box?) described. Variation I saw had your back against the wall, then push on the chest. Never trusted anyone enough to let them try it on me. Also never saw it work worth a damn. Maybe if it had worked we'd have tried again, but we decided it was a rumor.

New Knew of a guy in college who did it.
He had a pulley system set up in his dorm so that he could (while sittin) raise his leg and choke himself. If he passed out, his leg would drop and (theoretically) the rope around his neck would loosen up.

Evergreen had some WEIRD people.

New Yup, heard about it
In undergrad my wife used to take a tape recorder to class and then write notes from the recording later. This "game" (more specifically the variation that boxley describes) was described in a physiology class, along with a complete explanation of exactly how dangerous it was.

And yes, I've heard of the use of choking in sex as well. I heard about that from a brother who mentioned that on average 1-2 marines die a year by trying to asphixiate themselves while masturbating.

Cheers,
Ben

New Only heard of it . . .
. . in mention of people who died trying to get a sexual high from it, but not as a game.

in the movie,"Rising Sun", starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes.

While the imdb summary doesn't specifically state it, the mistress was into asphyxiation as a turn on. It got a bit out of hand.

Such is my exposure to the practice.

Peace...and, uh, hand me the oxygen, please.

Illegitimi non corborundum.
New Variant - hyperventilating + What's Next
then lying down for (some variety of endorphins) to wash over.

We used lots of airplane glue for, er airplanes; not ever did I hear (back in those Radio days) of anyone 'sniffing' same. Do recall though CCl4 carbon tetrachloride - a solvent used re airplane finishes - sweet odor and no doubt bioactive; glad I smelled that only a few times: it was one of the Worst things ever! for one's liver/life - to be in popular supply (before Neoconmen with power, natch).

(I guess, as society gets more like it Is -- more and more escapes-from-{shudder} <that> ensue, as the Knight / Grail connection.)

I look for, next:
All those handy electrodes via body-piercings?

Transistorized generators of various frequencies and [Ooops!] currents ..
Expect some deaths, but WTF. That surely beats a lifetime of RAP.
A little Ecstacy + Ohm's Law ... Priceless.

New Not for kids
I've heard of it as a sex thrill / game but only among adults, not kids.

New Re: Informal poll
We did something like that (exhale, have someone squeeze you around the chest until you nearly black out) once in elementar school (many decades ago), but it was a one-time thing, not a game.

The games were worse.

New Let me add another 'not me'.
I have heard of kids inhaling lots of different things to get 'high' - most things do this by, yep, you guessed it, cutting off the oxygen exchagne in the lungs.

And for those who mentioned auto-erotic asphyxiation, singer Michael Hutchence (from band INXS) is famously said to have died this way.

Wade.

New Yes absolutely
I remember kids doing that when I was one myself.

Often it involved solvents of one kind or another.
