Welcome to IWETHEY!

New That looks cool
definitely need to get some shots of that. I might be thru in September, around Labor Day, on a road trip to Wisconsin.

New OK, so lemme get this straight...
...Dallas decides that 1) the Mixmaster in neighboring Ft. Worth and 2) the Stack in LA are worthy of penis-envy, and so decide to make a copy of both of them?

To quote Donkey: "It sounds like someone's compensatin'!"

From [link|http://www.texasfreeway.com/Dallas/construction/completed/fw_mixmaster/fw_mixmaster.shtml|here], the MixMaster went from having support structures like this:

Sure, utilitarian roads work just as well, but which would you rather see on your daily commute?

New I'd rather see...
...traffic moving at or near the posted speed limit, as opposed to one-tenth of that speed. At posted speed, I don't care fuckall as to how ornate the bridge support structures are. (And, given the fact that such ornateness probably carries a hefty premium of tax dollars, utilitarian is quite OK by me, thankyewverymuch.)

New Its not that much more
[link|http://www.sugarlandtx.gov/content/Government_Engineering.htm|US 59 expansion] - $130,000,000

[link|http://www.sugarlandtx.gov/Pressroom/59beautification.htm|US 59 Beautification] - $430,000

I agree it'd be nice to not have to ever sit in traffic, but I doubt that's something we could afford to pay for.

New I dunno
Amtrak only wants $1.8B (which is the cost of 9 days in Iraq) for the next year, and Dallas is honeycombed with railroad lines (mostly UP) upon which commuter carriers could operate....

New It's more complicated than that
Based on SFBA experience, running a commuter rail line isn't quick to set up or super cheap to run. For example, schedules have to be coordinated with the freight trains -- which can often require track upgrades (the ACE commuter train required some doubled lines in places) and cause delays (see Amtrak long distance trains, which are often 3 hours late)

Yes, they can be a useful addition, but it has to be thought out. I'd bet even ACE, which is pretty full, runs at a loss.

New So then.. all that money spent on the Taj Mahal
coulda been saved if they'd just put in a {concrete box + dome} with maybe, some decent gold grafitti about the dead wife?
New I don't drive there
Nor do I pay taxes there, so I don't care what they do for recreation.
