First, add my welcome to you to this group, Amy.
My wife and I got to visit [link|http://www.nps.gov/bibe/home.htm|Big Bend National Park] for a few days back in February. What a rich variety of landscapes! From the the reeds along some parts of the Rio Grande, to the canyons, to the high desert, to the 8000 ft. Chisos Mountains. This park alone makes Texas worth a visit.
Where else can you travel a 100 miles on a designated US (US-385) highway, pass no one and have no one pass you, and see only a handful of cars going in the opposite direction?
And, on the way North out of the park, have to go through a border patrol check point manned by uniformed Mexicans! Well, OK, that's Mexican-Americans.
