New Barking dog is driving me insane
Anyone know any behavioral techniques to deal with excessive barking? Our Sadie (aka Psycho) wont shut up. She hears a dog barking 2 blocks over and she barks her fool head off. She sees the back end of car pull out down the block and she starts yapping away.

I'm considering getting a bark collar for her, but before I invest, maybe you all have some techniques I havent tried. Yes?
New Is she trainable otherwise?
The usual thing is to reward good behavior with treats of some sort. E.g. I taught our dog to sit on the bathroom scale to be weighed by giving her treats when she did it successfully. Now she gets very excited and does a little dance whenever I drag the scale out for her. :-)

She too likes to bark, and would seemingly destroy the mailman if she ever caught him. We try to always tell her "No!" when she barks like that, but of course we're not always around.

If you're always there you might have a shot via "No!" and some sort of reward when she's quiet (when she would have barked before). Otherwise, the collar bit (or perhaps a muzzle?) may be your only hope. But I've heard tales of dogs who never understood the collar thing and ended up barking as much as before and hurting themselves.

Luck! Let us know if you succeed.

Cheers,
Scott.
New empty squirter bottle, fill with water
everytime she barks go shh and squirt her. Dog thinks you sre peeing on it and gets very embarrased. Quickly makes the association that barking will get you pee'd on. Only you (assume you are the dominant pack member) must do this, otherwise she might do something about it with her siblings (the kids)
good luck,
thanx,
bill

New Good suggestions-
She is trainable. We trained her to do other things with treats and we're working on getting her off the couch with a spray bottle. We've had her less than a year. We got her from a neighbor who was going to give her up because she's too much of a handful. Prior to that she was picked up by a rescue group. Poor Sadie has had a tough life.

She's outside most of the day when I'm working (office is in the basement). I cant keep going up on down the steps every 30 seconds to give her a treat or spray her when she starts to bark. That's the problem.

I found a bark collar that emits a loud beep (like a smoke alarm) every time the dog barks. I dont know if that will work or not, but it appeals to me more than the collars that give small shocks.

Regarding the dominance issue- Pecking order is me, my 10 yo son, the dog, and my 6 yo old daughter. Getting the dog to recognize my dau as dominant has been an issue. Am working on that.

New well try the collar with the noise first then
do you have outside windows to the yard from the basement? If the collar doesnt work put her food and water by the window. Encourage the dog that the window is her "job" when she takes off barking holler her back have her sit and explain that running off barking is not her job.
thanx,
bill

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

...

and so on..
New I am going to tell you this once.
Not because I am being mean, but because you'll think I am mean.

I bought a training collar for my Weimaraner/Boxer Mix.

It has: Tone, Momentary and Continuous.

15 levels of buzz, 1 level of tone.

Wasn't cheap, but it has 1000+ ft range, is rechargeable and mostly waterproof but not submersible. ($239)

I have only once had to crank it up to 15. That was when I first got it. She ran after a rabbit across the road into the yard and was chasing it around and around.

I kept turning it up, turning it up, (after starting at 1). Once she stopped running, she felt it, Yiped once and came running back.

I'll be honest, I have put the thing on my arm and tried all the variables including continuous for 5 sec at level 15. It definitely is *NOT* comfortable, but does not hurt. It is more the surprise. I had my wife operate the control. She took sick pleaseure.

I will say, the just having the collar ON her now does the trick... even a block of plastic with 2 small bolts in it works... pretty soon, it'll be down to a regular collar. The only time I put the real collar on her is when there is a TON of activity around the house and gets her WOUND up.

BTW, I know this is obvious, but consistency, is the key to behavioral changes in dogs. Extreme consistency makes the biggest difference.

New I dont think you were mean
I stopped a the pet store this afternoon. They didnt have the sound bark collars- only the electric ones. Feeling desperate and impatient, I bought it. Strapped it on little Sadie (she's a beagle/springer spaniel mix). First time she barked it zapped her- it's supposed to feel like a static shock. They way she cried, it sounded like she was being mortally wounded. Made me feel sick. I took it off her right away and zapped myself with it. It wasnt too bad- just a little zing. Then again, I didnt put it on my neck. She's glued to my side all afternoon. Hasnt barked at all. I feel rotten.
New She'll get over it.She'll be happier knowing you're happy 2.
New Very Important...
Be sure to reward her for being quiet, somehow. And some TLC towards her wouldn't hurt either.

New Hmmm.
I believe in teaching dogs very well how to act (little children, too, for that matter.) But isn't trying to get a Beagle to stop barking kinda like trying to get the sun to stop rising? My next-door neighbors have a Beagle, and that thing is ALWAYS howling...

New "quiet-challenged"
How PC.

Yes, part of it is her breed, but I gotta get a handle on this nuisance barking. This is the 2nd beagle I've owned. The first one didnt bark nearly as much as dear Sadie. I tried the bark collar again- I thought maybe she was overly startled the first time and maybe that's why she reacted to strongly. But no, she got zapped and cried and whimpered hysterically. My kids both started crying when they saw her. Now that I have sufficiently traumatized the whole family I think it's best to take that vile collar back to the store. I'll make due with squirt guns and dog treats. I dont have the stomach for this aversion training.
New Well then, here ya go.

New I saw that when I was researching
Prefer that to what I bought but the pet store didnt carrying those and I didnt want to pay for shipping, so I impulsively bought what they had. Wont do that again.

Barking has decreased dramatically this morning- maybe she was a quick learner with the shock collar, maybe she's responding to some of the behavioral stuff I'm doing. My guess is she's scared shitless over that collar and will probably never bark again- she'll probably starting peeing in the house instead! Poor Sadie.
New Didn't say get a Barking Collar.
I got a training collar.

Big difference.

It take a person to control the thing.

Also, put the thing on the *SIDE* of the neck. It doesn't make them yipe there. (or as bad)

New This just in -
Sharper Image has a REWARD-type remote gadget, SI398 (note the idiots use an 'I' in a numerical string) which I suppose is described on their site.

Cute idea - this one rewards behavior via sounding a note (?) on a collar thigie: which means (as you've shown him/her, previously) -- there's a Neat-o Treat in the usual dish.

$169. Pity - but on sale for $100. Betcha it wouldn't be hard to use a remote 'key-finder beeper =CHEAP= and accomplish the same conditioning idea..

New Too rich for my blood
I've resorted to the old fashioned method of distracting her when she starts her incessant barking (squirt gun to the face) and rewarding her when she shuts up. It's a slow process. If I didnt have a life, I could devote all my time to this and have her trained up by now. As it is, I'm following her inside and out, upstairs and down, everytime I hear her start to yap, armed with my squirt gun and doggie treats. It was easier to potty train my kids.
