New Here's what I think you're expecting...

We'll see how long this theory lasts when it encounters developers whose code sucks, who know that their code sucks, and are afraid that your actions will point the finger at them. There is little nastier than political infighting from people who know that they are in the wrong. I'd like to suggest that you read The Prince to figure out how to make your hopes more likely to happen. Also you might want to read [link|http://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl?node_id=270083|http://www.perlmonks...pl?node_id=270083] and think carefully about the problem of how to criticize people without getting their egos involved.

Another interesting resource is The Psychology of Computer Programming. Its advice is all good, but you're unlikely to find yourself in a good enough political position to make people do that.

Cheers,
Ben
I have come to believe that idealism without discipline is a quick road to disaster, while discipline without idealism is pointless. -- Aaron Ward (my brother)
New Heh, good point
But I'm leaving a place where the person in charge didn't like to hear when he was wrong. This is the guy who used exclusively LEFT JOIN in all his queries because he didn't know -- until I pointed it out to him about two years ago -- the differences among various options. (Yes, he still uses esclusively LEFT JOIN.)

He won't trust anyone else with the admin password on the DB servers, making him the de facto DBA. He doesn't want to hire a DBA because he doesn't think we need one. Primary DB server has 6 replicated slaves. Secondary server has two slaves on-site, and another slave in each of 5 field offices. Millions of transactions per day. A pending request from our largest customer (representing nearly 50% of our volume) that, if implemented as they asked for, would produce about 100k transactions per minute, sustained. Nope, we don't need a DBA.

It became clear he didn't want to hear anything that contradicted his conclusions. I started looking. I'm leaving. As a good friend of mine says: If you can't change your company, change your company. Works for bosses, too: If you can't change your people, change your people.
