New Re: As a former Californian, let me say...
And as a lifelong Californian, let me observe how gratifying it is that so many of the people who prefer the South to my state actually live there.

cordially,

Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New Tut, tut, Rand, but Mike lives in Indiana.
The South ejected him some time ago. :)

New I'm a tarheel born and a tarheel bred and when I die ...
I'll be a misplaced tarheel dead ;-)

The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.

OK, George W. is deceptive to be sure. Dissembling, too. And let's not forget deceitful. He is lacking veracity and frankness, and void of sooth, though seemingly sincere in his proclivity for pretense. But he did not lie.

New OT on living in California
If required, Oakland isnt a bad pick but I would insist on either grass valley or redding. It isnt the native Californio's that are so annoying, but as you pointed out the transplants are a pain in the bendeco. The overcrowding is annoying and the uniformed services are a assholic nightmare but if one can avoid both its a great place. San Mateo is also very nice(or used to be)

New Same anywhere you go.
The natives are great, it's the fucking locusts that come in, drive up real estate prices, and piss in the lakes that get me.

(As a PacNW native, I, too, have had similar experiences, just delayed. Hear Portland, OR is now experiencing the same problems that Seattle had in the late '80s-mid '90s.)
In that final hour, when each breath is a struggle to take, and you are looking back over your life's accomplishments, which memories would you treasure? The empires you built, or the joy you spread to others?

Therin lies the true measure of a man.
