As a former Californian, let me say...
it couldn't happen to a nicer, more deserving group of people.

The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.

I think it just goes to show...
...that the Californians are still the nation's leading ingesters of hallucinogenic substances.
I can't think of any other logical explanation for Schwartzie to get elected.

Oh, really?
I didn't see any exit polls...again. People seem to have forgotten that once such things existed. They just trust that if the polls say that Arnold won more decisively than expected, then he must have. I guess the hero always pulls through in the end, right?
There are lots of touchscreens though, generally from companies with very bad track records and strong GOP backing...

Different outlets reported that differently
The CNN version said "better than expected".
And there were so many polls with fluctuating results that I am not entirely surprised that some were very close to the final results. Furthermore the way that you conduct a poll affects the outcome, sometimes in hard to predict ways.
Which is why I really want to see exit polls reinstated, because in a working democracy those are an easy, fast check on the integrity of the voting system. Furthermore they are more accurate since they directly reflect the actual population who in the end chose to vote, with far reduced issues about the survey technique possibly affecting the reported answers.

Re: As a former Californian, let me say...
And as a lifelong Californian, let me observe how gratifying it is that so many of the people who prefer the South to my state actually live there.

Tut, tut, Rand, but Mike lives in Indiana.
The South ejected him some time ago. :)

OT on living in California
If required, Oakland isnt a bad pick but I would insist on either grass valley or redding. It isnt the native Californio's that are so annoying, but as you pointed out the transplants are a pain in the bendeco. The overcrowding is annoying and the uniformed services are a assholic nightmare but if one can avoid both its a great place. San Mateo is also very nice(or used to be)

Same anywhere you go.
The natives are great, it's the fucking locusts that come in, drive up real estate prices, and piss in the lakes that get me.
(As a PacNW native, I, too, have had similar experiences, just delayed. Hear Portland, OR is now experiencing the same problems that Seattle had in the late '80s-mid '90s.)

Oops, I misunderstood.
I thought all this "Race to the bottom" talk was about our vanishing jobs and our diminishing paychecks. Now I understand that it is about our election process. First, our sitting pResident got fewer votes - and won! Now in the second example of this "Race to the bottom" concept sweeping our nation, the new CA Governor got fewer votes than the sitting governer ([link|http://www.capwiz.com/c-span/dbq/cagovcand/mainpage.dbq|http://www.capwiz.co...cand/mainpage.dbq]) - and won!
I get it now. It no longer matters what the People say in our elections.
