Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I'll start here
We are converting all the Y2K documentation from various formats to .html and to .png. Many of the original documents were stored in proprietary formats, using software the is no longer supported. That's the why on the conversion.

The question is: Is there a way to convert images from one format to another without opening them and then doing a "save as"? The summer hire doing the work just found a folder with 1200 .pcx files that need to be converted to .png.

Same question for any other format.

Thanks

Joe
When they took the Fourth Amendment, I was quiet because I didn't deal drugs.
When they took the Fifth Amendment, I was quiet because I was innocent.
When they took the Second Amendment, I was quiet because I didn't own a gun.
Now they've taken the First Amendment, and I can't say anything about it.
New Does it *have* to be Windows?
Because otherwise there are a couple of ways to do that. If you have any Linux boxes on your network, or could add one, I can give you the recipe.

New If
you have a way to save months of work, I'm sure that I can get a linux box set up here. Worse case, I would bring in a box of my own to do it.

Remember the original documents are in various formats. .met, .max, .pcx, .doc, .xls, .dat, .cob and many others. Even if only half and be "automated", I'd do it.

Turns out [link|http://imagemagick.org|Imagemagick] is available for Windows. Supports command-line [link|http://imagemagick.org/www/convert.html|conversion] from one format to another, which means it's scriptable.

It does batch conversions, with mods if you like. Free version.

Converting the one folder of 1300+ pcx files. Will try the other formats as found. Thanks.

New PMView Pro
PMView Pro (available for Windows & OS/2) has the ability to run conversion scripts for mass unatended conversion between a huge number of formats.

Besides that, [link|http://www.pmview.com/|PMView] is the best, easiest, fastest and most flexible image viewer-manipulator I've ever seen and worth far more than the $40 it costs. If folks had PMView there just wouldn't be dark and difficult to see pictures like from the NJ party. Slide up the brightness, slide gamma down to restore color intensity - takes a couple seconds. Cropping, color balance, rotation, all just as easy. Save in any format you like, with full GIF, PNG and JPG options.

Caviat: saves .eps (encapsulated postscript) but can't read it due to unacceptable licensing terms.

New You didn't see the originals

Several of them were taken after dark, some with no flash. And the ones that did have flash, the cheezy flash on the camera only reaches about 6-8 feet.

As for focus, the things takes forever to focus, so it's really not good for action shots, like the one of Bill climbing out of the pool. (One of the things I hate about auto-focus. It decides when it's focussed, and it decides when/if to snap the picture.)

I took some of those through PhotoShop. The image detail just wasn't there to bring up. I'm not a graphics pro, but I used to play one in the Marines, so I do know my way around brightness and gamma. Any more detail than what's there and you'd have to have the magic software they use in movies to pull a license plate out of five pixels.

Okay, the ones where the guys were under the umbrella and the pool was behind them I could have selected the foreground, feathered the edge, and brightened that without washing out the background. But they're just some candids. Like I said when I put up the link, if anyone wahts to prettify them better I can send you the originals.

New OK, I admit . .
. . I didn't see the originals. On the other hand, although I confess I did spend a full 30 seconds on it, the [link|http://www.aaxnet.com/ajg/NJ01.html|picture on the right] looks better to me.

Edit: Ooops. Used the small png instead of the larjer jpg. corrected.

New Then you spent three times what I did
And I also resized and cropped it. Besides, I chose to leave the faces a little darker than ideal so as not to wash out the background so much.

New Wow, that's darker in the browser
That looked a lot better in PhotoShop. Guess I'll have to fix them again, that *is* darker than I wanted.

New Here's a new version
[link|http://dkime.com/pics/BeePBash/20030705-002.jpg|This one] I *did* select just the foreground and adjust that. But I also used the default compression setting on the software that came with the camera the first time I did it. So I'd have to start over from the original if I wanted to improve it.

New compliment
Your cropping skills are first rate. Ever do "real" photography?
-drl
New Yup
I was editor of the base newspaper while in the Marines. "Editor" there was more what the civilian world would call, "copy editor, graphics, design, layout, writer management, every-damn-thing-except-final-editorial-control guy". So yeah, I did digital photo processing for a living for a couple years.

But before that, I did real real photography as photo editor for my high school yearbook. Yeah, high school, but I could put a head on a different body in the darkroom with real negatives and real photo paper and you couldn't see the edges. Damn that took some practice. I could've gotten a job with the Weekly World News.
