New Oops! Better to read the article first. Mea Culpa. Although.
Didn't realize from your snippet we were talking about kids here.

[Second Edit]
Hearing that the old German tavern tune we use for a national anthem down here got boo'ed during the Habs/Islanders game makes me even more inclined to move north.

The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.

Nothing like reminders from the past from a Real American, of what we'd already lost to the Yahoos.. even 19th century Yahoos.

Oh Dad, we're ALL Devo Yahoos now!

(Wonder how many HS grads have even heard of Jonathan Swift, let alone Gulliver's Travels. They must think that Yahoo.com came from some corruption of Yoo Hoo -?-)

New Well.. as it was written for adults
with a ton of tongue.. only partly in-cheek: you may have to explain a bit of the polit. history of Jolly Olde .. before s/he gets it. OTOH - how Could one explain all that to a 10 yo? Maybe just enjoy the imagery, for the first time around. Plenty of time to grok to fullness a few years down the pike.
