good ol kanader
[link|http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=31846|http://www.worldnetd...?ARTICLE_ID=31846] The insults grew personal when the players hit the ice. During a game against the Beverly Bandits, a team from Beverly, Ont., the boys said their Canadian counterparts were verbally abusive during face-offs. "They told us we s----, gave us the finger and said 'Down with the U.S.A.' or 'The U.S.A. s----," Nadeau said. Making matters worse, the referee chimed in, "I agree with you," following one Canadian player's derogatory comment. now thats the side of canada they try to hide to outsiders. Its there just being publicised now. Contrary to a claim in the article Beverly Ontario is not froggish. WASP country. thanx, bill

Yep, the fine sports tradition of
trash talking seems to have gotten into hockey.
'Tis a real shame, that.
Anybody remember the comments from the US hockey olympic team at the last olympics in the week leading up to the gold medal game?
I can kind of understand the kids doing it, but the ref was waaaay out of line; he's an adult and should know better.
The coach of the team in question at least reacted to it appropriately; in the article (sounds like it was lifted straight from the G&M; they must've put it on the wire) he said he was going to give them a lecture about respecting your opponent.

What crowd assaulting the bus?
In the article I read (G&M) they were talking about people in an anti-war march giving them the finger, dragging a US flag through the street before torching it, etc. Nothing about assaulting the bus. Taking a look at the WND article, I don't see anything there about assaulting the bus either.
Engaging in a little creative embellishment there?
You also have to realise that burning flags has a long and honourable history in Montreal; the number of times I've seen the *Canadian* flag get burned in Montreal is pretty high.
BTW- George Wannan sounds like a real idiot; as you said, Beverly is in Ontario. Perhaps he's from Belleville. Maybe Sault Ste. Marie.

Oops! Better to read the article first. Mea Culpa. Although.
Didn't realize from your snippet we were talking about kids here.
[Second Edit] Hearing that the old German tavern tune we use for a national anthem down here got boo'ed during the Habs/Islanders game makes me even more inclined to move north.

The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.

Nice sig. there..
Nothing like reminders from the past from a Real American, of what we'd already lost to the Yahoos.. even 19th century Yahoos.
Oh Dad, we're ALL Devo Yahoos now!
(Wonder how many HS grads have even heard of Jonathan Swift, let alone Gulliver's Travels. They must think that Yahoo.com came from some corruption of Yoo Hoo -?-)

Well.. as it was written for adults
with a ton of tongue.. only partly in-cheek: you may have to explain a bit of the polit. history of Jolly Olde .. before s/he gets it. OTOH - how Could one explain all that to a 10 yo? Maybe just enjoy the imagery, for the first time around. Plenty of time to grok to fullness a few years down the pike.
