There's a big discussion over on sci.physics.research about the role of referees and publishers in the writing of papers, in light of the Bogdanoff affair. Apparently most active researchers rely more on the arxiv.org preprint server than they do on dead-tree journals. This has the journal-publishing people scared shitless.

One can now do his own research, typeset his own work, and put it before the research community without intercession from schools, publishers, or even referees. Bullshit will be instantly recognized as such, and ideas will get distributed without reference to anything other than their merit. This is ultimately a giant stride for science.
