New Re: Our tax dollars at work?
One site the SIIA is unlikely to challenge is PubMed, the National Library of Medicine site (www.pubmed.gov) that provides free access to millions of medical articles and research papers. PubMed was established much earlier and has a strong foothold, LeDuc said. "We have no intention of going after PubMed."
Did anyone else hear the "yet" in there?

New I guess we have to shut down the libraries as well

I mean, aren't they unfairly competing with bookstores? Where's the ABA on this whole 'book-lending' issue?

And what about the Post Office? They're unfairly competing with UPS and FedEx!

Crap. What a bitter way to start my day.....

New Precisely
Do we want to foster an open civilization where information is freely shared and have an open market of ideas? Or would we prefer to have a rigid hierarchy with access provided only to the wealthy? Welcome to the american caste system sans mobility for your living pleasure.

Along with websites and libraries, I recommend we eliminate:

1) Public schools - there are lots of private schools struggling to compete with the free education system.
2) Police force *and* military - its putting the handgun dealers out of work.
3) Highway maintenance - lets allow private companies to bid on toll booth locations and service contracts - this also allows us to eliminate the pesky DMV (not all bad).
4) IRS information services - HR Block and Intuit are really suffering here. Plus, think of the extra revenues available as penalties are arbitrarily assessed on the clueless masses that will be unable to decipher the taxcode.

Commercialism is out of control and is now a detriment to the public welfare.

Free markets enslave.
I am out of the country for the duration of the Bush administration.
Please leave a message and I'll get back to you when democracy returns.

New Predicted By Marx
Commercialism is out of control and is now a detriment to the public welfare.

Hate to say it, but Marx predicted that unrestrained capitalism motivated solely by profit would consume itself.

New Marx's prescription sucked...
but his description was bang on. There's a reason that Titans of Industry want him thoroughly discredited, instead of only the discrediting that he deserves.

Hell, I know that Nietzche was a nutter - but he made some good points. I know Marx was a nutter, but he also made some good points.

Now, Henry Ford - definitely a nutter. Don't know enough about the man to know if he made any good points.

New Henry Ford
basically founded the model that would serve the American Industrial society well for the next 70 years. It was even named after him. He's the guy that said "of course I pay my workers well, even though I don't have to. I want my workers to be my customers too... and they can only be my customers if they can afford it." In short, he realised that taking less now would mean his assets would be less in the short term, but more secure in the long term.

I learned about this model in my second year Political Economy class at Queen's University. It's called Fordism.
